7.2. Adverbs of time

There is a group of adverbs known as adverbs of time, following are some examples:

sempre                         always

mai                              never/ ever

ancora                         still/ yet

non ancora                  not yet

già                               already

ora/adesso                   now

presto                          early

tardi                             late

This group of adverbs follows the same guidelines explained above. The adverbs già and ancora (versus non ancora) require close attention. Following are some examples:

Sono già le undici. = It’s already eleven o’clock.

Era ancora in giro alle due. = She was still out at two o’clock.

La posta non è ancora arrivata. = The mail still hasn’t arrived.

Ero già uscito per andare a lavoro e non era ancora rientrata! = I had already left for work and she hadn’t come home yet!
