*Note: essere is often used to indicate more permanent aspects of people or things, e.g., Loro sono canadesi = They are Canadian. stare can mean “to stay/remain,” e.g., Sto a casa stasera = I’m staying home tonight; it can also mean “to be,” e.g., Come stai? Sto bene, grazie = How are you? I’m fine thank you. There are many other uses and meanings of stare, one is to express “to be about to...” e.g., sto per uscire = I’m about to leave.
