With ice and cold impending and on your house depending, how can you keep warm if the heat goes out? According to barefoot survival expert Cody Lundin in his book "When All Hell Breaks Loose" you can:
Look for naturally warm places in your house, especially rooms with south facing windows.
Create a micro-climate (a house within a house). Smaller rooms with low ceiling work better for this. Close the door, block the bottom with a towel to seal in as much warmth as possible.
Put something over the windows, plastic works best because the sun can still warm up the room. Otherwise, cover windows with blankets after sunset.
Still not warm enough? Create a fort out of blankets in your warm room, like when you were a child! (or a real camping tent, mind those light fixtures though!)
Snuggle as a family when you sleep. The average human body put off a lot of heat.
Obviously, using a fireplace if you have one. Be careful with space heaters, carbon monoxide can be deadly if not properly ventilated and fire is a real concern if they tip over. (Follow all manufacturer instructions exactly when using a space heater.)
