Springing Into Sports
Gracie Goings-12 There are six spring sports here at KHS and they are hitting their midway point in the season.
The girls of the KHS soccer team have been working hard to prepare for the spring season. “The team has been improving so much over the time we’ve been playing. I think everyone is having a lot of fun and really liking the team atmosphere,” Hadyn DeLeeuw-12 said.
With the season only at its halfway point, the girls have more practices and games to prepare for, “The team should just keep improving and hopefully we will grab the district title at the end of the season,” DeLeeuw said.
KHS junior, Chase Killday, is a pitcher and first baseman on the varsity baseball team. “So far the baseball team is doing good. The team is just starting to figure out who we are. Even though our record isn’t where we want it to be it’s still pretty early in the season so we will figure it out,” Killday said.
This is Killday’s first year playing varsity full time, and after such a successful season last year, Killday says, “There were shoes to fill so to speak, but eventually we all found our rolls.”
The Boys’ Tennis Team is undefeated so far this season. “Tennis is going pretty well for me so far. I try to go out there and do my best everyday. I play to the best of my ability, and that has been winning me some matches.” Reza Hamidi-12 said.
Tennis is hard work and the boys practice daily to stay on top of their game. “I condition myself both physically and mentally to be prepared for any challenge and so far I have been with consistent wins in my singles matches,” Hamidi said.
The KHS Boys Golf Team has been trying to stay focused during their golf tournaments. Golf can be more of a mental game than a physical game. “Everybody on the team has the potential of playing well, but some more than others will be completely ruined by a mental break and their scores will just shoot up,” Matthew Nothdurft-12 said.
The Quiz Bowl Team recently competed at districts and received second place to Moberly. Team captain Claire Benevento-12 feels like the team did pretty well at districts. “We’re just so well matched with Moberly that it just depends on the set of questions that were asked.”
The track and field team has had a rough start to the season due to the wind and rain but as the weather clears up, the team dominates the track. KHS senior pole vaulter Cassie Jennings, broke the KHS pole vaulting record, but the season is not over yet. “My goal is to make it to state and hopefully climb up from the fifth place spot I received last year.”
