Why you should join the WAWICA
Gracie Stengel- March 30, 2022
This year the WAWICA News was brought back to life after 5 years of dormancy. Our small staff has written articles nearly every week highlighting athletics, pop culture, our community and so much more. We are looking for our next group of individuals to take over and explore what it means to be part of the WAWICA. Our website is a place for our students to express their opinions, celebrate their peers, and give how-tos for anything they could imagine.
Have you ever wanted to rank your top 10 favorite kinds of candy? You can do that here! Those of you who love sports can highlight your favorite team after a game that kept you on the edge of your seat. If you want a place to speak your mind and change the world? Here's your place to chase your dreams! Here are a few examples of fun articles we have written...
Even if writing isn't your strong suit you can be a part of the WAWICA! Photography and videography is a very important part of school media. We work with the yearbook to bring high-quality images to the community and school.
Here you can learn skills about technology and writing. Interviews are a regular part of our work here and it gives you opportunities to get to know your teachers and fellow students on a whole new level! Designing each article is a fun aspect to our work as well. Working as part of the WAWICA gives you complete creative freedoms to express who you are.
Q&A
I talked to the staff of the WAWICA to answer a few questions for you
Why do you enjoy being part of the WAWICA?
Senior Editor, Lily Roberts said, "I enjoy getting real experience in something I will be doing for my future career." The WAWICA is a great fit for many hoping to pursue a career in journalism or communications. All of our staff agree that having the ability to choose whatever topic and voice their opinion freely makes it a great opportunity.
Why did you choose to join?
Sylvia Leister, another of our senior editors, said that she joined because of her friends. Finding other people to participate with you can make it even more fun. Taylor Starkey explained that she just, "put two and two together." Her love of writing and her love of books made this the perfect place to do book reviews.
What would you say to encourage others to join?
Lily said, "Just give it a shot, you might like it. If you don't, then oh well but at least you can try. You can literally do any topic you want to do. Like if you join and say you just want to do certain types of videos or certain types of writing... just make it your own." Sylvia described how fulfilling it can be when you write an article and have people come up and tell you that it caught their attention. It is a great feeling to know your work was interesting to someone.
Is it a big commitment?
Fitting it into your schedule would definitely make it an easier choice because it would give you a designated time every day to write and work with your fellow staff. But finding motivation can be easy when you chose the articles to write. Lily Roberts describes it as a "Nice break from your regular school work".
How does it work?
Every week the staff members pick one article they would like to write. Anything from sports, to opinions, to what is trending. We try to assign articles on Wednesdays and publish them the next Wednesday but that deadline is flexible. We also run an Instagram account where we try to advertise the articles that we are excited about.
I hope this article convinced you to give the WAWICA a shot next fall. This year working together as a team to bring articles to the school and community is something I will appreciate forever.
