There has been TONS of hype around Squid Game lately, but what is the Netflix Original series even about? In this article, Waterford High School students share their opinions on Squid Game and give recommendations on whether or not you should watch it. Don’t worry, as this article is spoiler free!
If you haven’t already heard of Squid Game from a friend, browsing Netflix, or the internet, here is some background information. It is a K-drama, or Korean drama series made in South Korea. It was created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, and stars Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo and Wi Ha-jun. Netflix's description of Squid Game is “Hundreds of cash strapped players accept a strange invitation to compete in children’s games. Inside, a tempting prize awaits - with deadly high stakes.”
Opinions from people who have already watched Squid Game
In an Interview with senior Ethan Miller, he recommended me to watch Squid Game, saying it was a “good series” but that I should make sure to watch it in Korean, because the english dub is “quite horrible.” Ethan thinks that because the lips do not match up with the words, the Korean version is much better. When asked to give a rating, Ethan said a solid 8/10, which would have been an eleven out of ten if not for the ending. Peyton Powers recommends Squid Game to people who enjoyed watching or reading The Hunger Games, and rates it a 10/10. However, Peyton was dissatisfied with the ending. I have never watched Squid Game, but it seems to me like the ending left more to be desired.
Speculations from people who have yet to watch Squid Game
Senior Bailee Clarida gives a blunt description of the series, saying "it is about a bunch of poor people being selected to play a game to the death for a lot of money by some weirdo." He followed up by saying that he would watch it if he could, but he does not have Netflix. In a second interview, Lily Roberts thinks that Squid Game is WAY to violent after watching 10 minutes of it, and when she first heard the title, she thought that it was a video game. Our third senior, Gracie Stengel shares the same opinion, getting a video game vibe from the title, and says that "the matching outfits gives me prison vibes, and reminds me of Divergent, or The Hunger Games." We have heard that opinion twice now, therefore Hunger Games enjoyers should definitely pick up this series.
Squid Game is the biggest show on Netflix right now, and I recommend watching it before it either gets spoiled by a friend or spoiled by browsing the internet. If you do not plan on watching it, whether it is too violent or you are not interested in television, you are missing out big time according to our interviewees. Thanks for reading and see you next week!
