Homecoming Dresses: Past Trends And Present Predictions
Gracie Stengel September 13, 2021
Homecoming’s arrival on September 18th has everyone eagerly waiting. This stands as a day that we all come together in our fancy dresses and swagalicious suits to create memories you will carry with you for a lifetime. Just like every year, we will see a trend in the popular style of dresses.
Before I get into my predictions for this year, I’ll take us back in time to the popular dresses of the past 3 years.
In 2018...
The two piece dress was all the rage, ranging from big floral designs to lots of sequins. The usual style for the skirt being tulle or satin. For those who wanted to play it safe, they went for a simple but classy dress like the one pictured on the right above. An a-line halter dress in a tasteful color was a popular choice also.
In 2019...
Satin dresses in colors such as emerald green, baby blue, and various shades of pink and purple were very clearly the popular choice at the time. Another dress that made an appearance in 2018 is the metallic dress pictured in the middle. Eye catching in all lighting the metallic dress offered an iridescent glow. Textured dresses made of lace or tulle were introduced and often featured gold accents.
While 2020 didn’t include a homecoming dance for many schools in America, a trend can still be seen through the dresses that were worn by those who hosted their own homecomings...
Bright colored sequin dresses took over the homecoming season last year. They were seen all over social media from instagram posts to tik tok videos. Although the sequin dress takes the cake for the most popular, the tight silk dress is definitely a close second. The cowl neck style made these dresses flattering and brought a vintage 1970’s feel. These dresses were most likely popular due to their low price point and versatility. Dresses similar to the one pictured in the middle above could be worn for multiple occasions which added to their appeal. Lastly, trends from 2019 carried into 2020 with the textured dresses, like the floral lace on the right. Of course it was updated to fit the “tight dress” style of the 2020 homecoming.
In 2021 there could be any variety of popular dresses; no one will really know until homecoming is here but I would like to try to predict what trends I think we will see.
Beads, sparkles, and sequins! I think that a big trend this year will be lots of bling like the dresses pictured above. Tighter dresses are a popular choice, but loose dresses are still very classy and flattering on all body types. Not only will there be lots of bling, but one shoulder dresses seem to be making a lovely comeback from the early 2000s.
To the readers,
Remember that even if your dress is trendy or basic, expensive or budget friendly, flowy or form fitting, it is beautiful. If you are going for an iconic suit look, then you go! You will look amazing. Be confident, have fun, and enjoy the 2021 Homecoming!
