There is a bit of fog surrounding the minds of the general population when it comes to the military, and what their life is really like. Nothing is really black and white here, but listing out the pros and cons can give a better idea of what military life is like.
The military of the past was stricter than it is now, rules have changed and overall, the power of senior officers has decreased. Older veterans recall senior officers being able to throw things at them and cuss them out during basic training, this does not fly in today's world. There is also a very high rate of sexual assault in the military, with many leaders promising reform and never following through with their promises. This has been a constant thing, unlike the physical violence of drill sergeants weaning over the years. Veterans also have a higher homelessness rate than average American citizens.
People often believe the military food to be disgusting or terrible, but the reality is that you will be eating food from whatever country you are in. Also, the free education is one of the major reasons for joining the military. Having no debt and benefits during college is a major upside to going to the military. There is a lot of travel in the military, and all of it is free, as well as free healthcare for you and your future spouse and children.
In conclusion, the military may not be for everyone, especially not minorities/women. But, the benefits can be good for those who cannot afford education or would love to travel the world at no expense. Those who do not wish to leave their hometown or the faint of heart would be better in a military office job or better off not joining at all.
