What the heck is an Enneagram??
Lilith Roberts - 2/8/22
An enneagram is another personality definer. Unlike many others, this test or personality type is defined by what people are driven by. There are 9 different personality types that are all very different, yet you may find yourself not being able to choose which one fits you the best.
These people are reasonable, truthful, and highly idealistic people. As you read they are perfectionists. Driven by wanting to improve constantly, be right, strive higher, be consistent with their ideals, and to justify themselves in any situation. Their basic fear is of being corrupt and evil, vice versa, they desire to be good, balanced, and have integrity.
Typically called "The Reformer", type ones have a sense of mission
Twos are driven by wanting to help people. This is why they are called the helper, constantly helping people and themselves sometimes. These types fear being unwanted or unworthy of being loved. Twos are empathetic, warm-hearted and sincere. They have problems with possessiveness and acknowledging their needs at times.
Type Threes are the achievers because they are success-oriented. They are adaptive, driven, excelling, and image-conscious people. This type is often known to be attractive and charming. They love to be successful, so you may find them trying to seduce you into what they want. They fear being worthless and have problems with working too much/competitiveness. Threes love to be admired, attention, and impress others.
Type fours, otherwise called The Individualist, are sensitive and introverted. They are expressive, dramatic, and sometimes temperamental or self-absorbed. This type fears having no personal significance or identity; however, fours are very self-aware and reserved. They are in touch with their emotions and can be very honest, creative, or personal with others. The Fours are constantly on a path to find their identity and significance in life, which makes them constantly express their individuality and surround themselves with beauty.
As you may suspect, this type is very intense. Being the Investigator, Fives are usually thinking on a deeper level than most. They are perceptive, innovative, and secretive. Even though this type is very isolated they fear being useless and incapable. Right on track, type fives love to be helpful, capable, and competent. They are alert, insightful, and curious. Thinking so deeply all the time you can sometimes feel as though fives are detached and in their own world when in reality they are drowning in their own deep thoughts.
Type 6, The Loyalists, are the committed, security-oriented type. These people are often good workers due to their drive and loyalty to their promises and tasks. Responsible and trustworthy, this type is a good troubleshooter. They can think outside the box in an organized way to get the job done. Their basic desire is to have security and support which is also what they fear not having.
Type 7 is the enneagram everyone wants to be. 7's are the life of the party, fun to be around, and just happy-go-lucky people. This type is very extroverted, optimistic, and versatile. This type is always ready for new and exciting experiences. This type struggles with impatience and impulsiveness. Driven by wanting to be satisfied and content, these types fear being deprived and in pain. They want to maintain freedom and happiness while avoiding missing any experiences that may be valuable to them.
This is the powerful and dominant type. Eight's are very self-confident, strong, and assertive. Their motivation in life is to be self-reliant, prove their strength, and resist weakness. Therein, they fear being controlled by others and being harmed. This type also feels they must control their environment and the people in it. This can be confrontational and intimidating to others, which sometimes makes 8's scary to people. They sometimes have temper problems and can't be vulnerable with others. It will take time and trust for an 8 to truly talk to you and let down their walls. At their best, however, 8's use their strengths to improve others' lives and be inspiring to all.
Type Nine, the peacemaker, is easy-going and modest. This type is accepting, trusting, and stable. Named the peacemaker, you would assume correctly that they are driven by having harmonious environments around them. They constantly want to keep the peace and avoid conflict or tension. Nine's are usually creative, supportive, and optimistic. Sometimes Nine's get themselves in trouble by going along with anything just to keep everyone happy and peaceful. This makes them complacent, simplifying problems for people when maybe they shouldn't be. At their best, the peacemaker does exactly as they should, embrace everyone, bringing people together and resolving their conflicts.
These are all just brief descriptions of the enneagram types. I am not a professional and there are certainly professionals out there. One podcast that I would highly recommend is Jen Hatmaker and her podcast "For the Love." She has many seasons, but there is one called "For the love of the Enneagram" and it is very informative. She has many professionals come on and each type has a full episode on it. There are also many articles out there on it and they can go in further depth if you so choose to do so. Learning about your enneagram, and the enneagrams of others can help you better understand yourself and everyone around you!
