Top Albums of 2021
Gracie Stengel- January 12, 2022
In 2021 we got to experience lots of good music. From summer anthems to blast with the windows down to songs we could cry in the shower to, we got it all. New artists came to fame and won our hearts. Old artists did it again and wowed us with their endless talent. I compiled a list of the albums from the past year. Some were my favorites and some were simply undeniably popular. So, in no specific order here are the top 7 albums of 2021.
Debuting in early 2021 this album took pop culture by storm. The single, "Drivers License", released on January 8, was the center of many tik tok trends and was played on repeat by many, including myself. Gaining popularity the song made it possible for the rest of the album to be so successful. Songs such as "Good 4 U" and "Brutal" were popular features on the album also.
Being Adele's first album since 2015 made this long a long-awaited treasure for her fans, including me. She released the song "Easy On Me" on October 15th, nearly a month before the rest of the album, and was it was played everywhere. Days before the release of 30, Adele had an incredible performance at the Griffith Observatory where she debuted the unreleased songs and performed her old songs for the first time in public since the pandemic began.
Planet Her is impossible to escape. This album came out in June of 2021 setting it up for being a summer go-to. Some of the song demos were leaked and became trends on tik tok making it nearly impossible for Doja to not include them. Featured on the album is "Kiss Me More", an iconic collaboration with SZA. Nearly 5 of the songs have been the center of a tik tok trend after the release adding immensely to their popularity.
This is the second album of the queen's re-recordings. Fans had been impatiently awaiting the release of the 10-minute version of her song "All Too Well" which luckily was included and was as amazing as anticipated. She had songs featuring other great artists such as Phoebe Bridgers and Chris Stapleton. Like the album "Fearless (Taylor's Version)" she included songs from the vault making them 25-30 songs each. This album packed all the emotional punch of the original that was released in 2012.
This album is full of absolute bangers. Songs like "Industry Baby" and "Montero" were played all the time last year. Even the songs that didn't gain as much popularity are still works of art. The music videos from this album gained some negative media attention but Lil Nas X handled the backlash well and continued to focus on his career and music production.
This album, by the beautiful Dua Lipa, took the pop industry by storm in 2021. Her unique sound showed throughout the entire album. Her upbeat and electric tempo makes her music an experience to listen to. Songs including "Levitating" and "Break my Heart" played all throughout the year despite the fact it was actually released in 2020.
While I am not a consistent fan of Billie I can appreciate her newest album Happier Than Ever which she released in July of 2021. The overall vibe of it was sad and reflective but it had its powerful moments. She kept her signature soft voice and lyrics with significant meaning. Hits such as, "Therefore I am" and "Your Power" got lots of attention on social media and were the center of multiple trends.
