Have you listened to Lil Nas X’s debut album, MONTERO? Well, I have, and it’s pretty awesome.
Lil Nas X has had many controversial moments since his rise to fame, but no matter if you’re a Nas lover or hater, his music stands on its own. When ‘Old Town Road’ became huge in the music industry back in 2019, Nas had never been heard of before. That was the summer of every single kid in America screaming the lyrics anywhere it was being played. I was a counselor at 4H camp and during our Thursday Camp Dance I played Old Town Road and I can still hear the screamed lyrics, "I got the horses in the back, horse track is attached. Hat is matted black, got the boots that's black to match," in my head when I look back. In 2019 alone, this song had 2.5 billion streams. Ever since then, Lil Nas has gained an Instagram following of 11.1 million followers and created a very loyal fan base. In August, Lil Nas X announced the release date of his album MONTERO was September 17, 2021. Everyone was ready to stream it.
The 15 song, 41 minute album leads off with his first dropped song, MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name) that dropped March 26, 2021. This song already has 24 million streams and reached Number One on Rolling Stone’s Top 100 Chart. The music video for MONTERO received tons of backlash as it featured Nas in many different forms, one of him dancing with the devil. Lil Nas X persevered through all the hate and dropped ‘Industry Baby’ on July 23rd. This song, one of my personal favorites, had over 40 million streams in under a month after its release. This was Nas’s third consecutive released song to hit Number One on the Top 100 Chart. Industry Baby featured Jack Harlow, TikTok’s recent obsession, and made it his first Number One hit. This song is third on the album lineup.
Heading out of pre-released songs on this album we go to song number two, ‘Dead Right Now’ which is my favorite on the album, as of right now. This whole album is a rollercoaster of emotions, starting off with hype songs featuring Doja Cat, Elton John, and Megan Thee Stallion. Then switching into the second half you enter into your feels with the sadder/slower songs. Finishing off the album strong with “Am I Dreaming” features 28 -year -old Miley Cyrus, who brings in an insane element to this album. Known for her raspy voice, Miley switches it up with a smooth tone and beautiful harmonies with Lil Nas.
As of Wednesday, September 22, the album has over 1.5 billion total streams on Spotify and as of Monday the 27th, it debuts at #1 on the weekly global Spotify album chart. This album has already made its way onto millions of people's phones. Whether or not you like Lil Nas X, his music stands on its own. If you haven’t yet, stream MONTERO on any platform you listen to your music, you won’t regret it.
