The Waterford Wrestling team is wrapping up a very successful season. With lots of hard work and determination, they have made their mark. This group of boys and their supportive fans have traveled all over for meets this season and they are not finished yet.
After finishing 2nd at the District Wrestling meet. Junior Wrestler, Lane Cline, will be advancing on to the State Wrestling Championship. Last year Cline attended the State Championship as an alternate but used that potential to make it all the way this year. Judson Cooper, a sophomore, will also have the honor of attending. After placing 5th in the 215-pound weight class at the District Meet he will be advancing on as an alternate.
In an interview with the WAWICA, Judson Cooper said this season has been great. He feels that the team had high hopes from the beginning. He wouldn't necessarily say it has gone better than expected but more that they met the high expectations they set for themselves. The team trains long and hard all the time. Cardio workouts and muscle training prepare them for the endurance that the sport requires.
The boys push themselves through all of it in hopes of bettering themselves. Jud says that "Everything leading up to it is what it's made for". This mindset of working hard for the end result is what motivates this team to be successful. Even though they faced a handful of injuries, he feels it wasn't a setback for them, but just another obstacle they had to overcome. These boys took the challenges and came back stronger than they were before.
As an alternate for the state meet Judson feels relieved that his hard work is paying off. He says, "When you realize what you've done it's like a weight lifted off your shoulders." He looks forward to the next season because he has realized his potential and knows that he can achieve even more in the coming year.
In an Interview with the WAWICA, Lane Cline said that it feels amazing to see his hard work pay off. His dreams of going to the state tournament and competing in the Schottenstein Center are finally coming true. Cline has been preparing for this moment since he was in second grade improving his technique each year. He said that he has been working out and running multiple times a week to get in shape for this season. Throughout the season he continued to work hard to keep his mind on wrestling. He feels that mental preparation is a big part of the sport.
Lane and his teammates share a great bond. He says, "My teammates push me to be the best that I can possibly be and they help me prepare for the upcoming meets." They are, however, more than just teammates to him. He says "They are a part of my life and when I'm in the wrestling room they are my family."
The WAWICA would like to congratulate Lane and Judson on their accomplishments and wishes them luck!
