Lilith Roberts - 5/3/22
I talked to the Senior class of 2022 this week to get a look at how they're feeling. As the end of the school year approaches, all of the classes start to feel a little giddy. Yes, finals week may be dreadful, but in reality, everyone wishes it would come faster so they can get to the real prize-- summer! For freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, the end of the year signifies a break and the next chapter in their lives. The following year they'll be right back in high school just with a different curriculum. Now, for our senior bunch, the end of the year comes with many milestones and important days. This year it's coming fast and our last month is filled with a King's island trip, prom, senior award day, Serve Waterford day, Graduation, and many more. There are also scholarship application deadlines left and right, planning for grad parties and award dinners/lunches for accepted scholarships. I'm probably forgetting something, even though this is all a part of my plate as a senior too!
Basically, I wanted to see how Waterford High School seniors were feeling about everything coming up this next month. Are they stressed? Do they feel like they have too much on their plate? Are they having a grad party? Are they going on a senior trip? Let's get into their answers.
Overall, when I asked these seniors if the end of the year was stressing them out, it averaged out to a "yes!". Kiley Doak mentioned the yearbook was one of her big stressors at the moment. As one of the lead editors, Kiley has been on top of pictures, yearbook pages, and more. She says she balances work and school pretty well, working 30 hours and going to school part-time. Jaelynn said she was also feeling stressed and like she has a lot on her plate. She works, runs track, and goes to school full-time.
Julia Cooper says, "I'm feeling." Jenessa Lang, who is a full- time student and softball player, says there's too much to do. The two say they feel there is a lot on their plates. Peyton Powers said, "I'm pretty fed up with high school, it feels like a waste of time." For a lot of the seniors, they don't have many classes because they have taken them all. Maxing out on WSCC courses has also left a lot of students waiting to move on to the next step. Ashlee Wagner said that the FFA banquet felt like graduation in a way, that "really did not help the senioritis." Essie Porter, Ashlee, and Peyton all agreed that they feel like they have a lot on their plate. The three of them all work a job and Essie is nearly full time. Balancing a job, school and scholarships can be a lot.
Gavin Brooker said his senior year, "is going." He is feeling stressed about the concept of having to move on. Gavin works at IGA, runs and throws in Track & Field , and goes to school. He is just starting work and is excited to make some money before college, attending Muskingum. Abby and Kaylor Offenberger said they are feeling slightly stressed about the end of the year. Kaylor mentioned how track can be stressful when you get home late from meets and have to go to school the next day. She will be continuing to work as a lifeguard at the Beverly-Waterford pool this summer. Abby just had her birthday this past weekend and won the title of Prom queen on Saturday night. She does a small cleaning job for her church.
Grant McCutcheon and Holden Dailey are not stressed. Holden runs track and goes to school and he says that he doesn't feel like he has much on his plate, leaving him coasting through the end of this year. Grant agreed, as he is a student-athlete, but isn't currently in season for any of his sports. He works as a lawnmower locally.
Sylvia Leister is also feeling stressed saying, "growing up," is what she is nervous for. Gracie Stengel agreed and said specifically about getting things together before graduation. Gracie works at Dollar General manages the track team and goes to school full time. She says that prom was, "a good break from the stress."
Lilly Franchino said she is stressed out. She said she felt like she should've done more of her scholarships and currently is stressed about her speech for graduation. She is a student-athlete full time while playing softball. Cara Taylor and Mackenzie Suprano said they were always stressed. Jacob Huffman disagreed, saying nothing stressed him out. Jacob is a student-athlete playing baseball. Mackenzie and Cara both also play softball and go to school. All three of these student-athletes, plus Holden Dailey, just had their signing on May 5th. Mackenzie will continue to play basketball, Jacob baseball, Cara softball, and Holden football at their respective colleges.
Lastly, this author is feeling pretty stressed as scholarships are finishing up, TVC's for track are coming up and graduation is right around the corner. I work at Jukebox with many of my classmates and thankfully love my job as a waitress. I'm excited about the next chapter, but starting to get extremely sad about leaving my family and my cats especially.
There are a lot of senior trips going down once school lets out for our class of 2022. One fun group is the Kings Island Trip that took place Friday the 6th. This trip always stems from the senior stats class, but is open to all of the seniors. The group held a penny raffle fundraiser in the past couple weeks where they raised over $1,000 for the trip expenses and the winner received $250.
We have groups headed to Holden beach, Outer Banks and Denver, Colorado! This summer is sure to be filled with many fun adventures from all of the soon-to-be adults.
Before we wrap up this senior check-in, let's talk about what graduating this senior class from high school means a new class! The current 8th graders and incoming freshmen will be joining the high schoolers here at Waterford High School. So, to give them a little freshman high school guide, I asked the seniors if there is one piece of advice for them, what would it be?
Sylvia said, "Pack your lunch." Gracie said, "Don't get senioritis early." Cara said, "Don't try to make everyone like you, it's not gonna happen." Mackenzie agreed with her saying, "Yep, that's a good one." Lilly said, "Take a lot of pictures! I was just making a tik tok last night and I realized I need to take more pictures, I want to remember all this." Kiley said, "Just have fun. High school isn't that hard, so just don't get worked up over little things." Jaelynn said, "Don't feed into drama, just mind your business." Julia said, "Be friends with Senora and take Spanish all four years." Peyton said, "Don't procrastinate, and some anti-depressants." Ashlee and Essie said, "Snacks, lots of snacks." Abby said, "Do as many activities as you can and take pictures." Kaylor said, "Get all your stupid classes done first, so then your senior year you can do nothing."
I also asked these seniors about their own freshman year(if they can remember it). If there were one teacher or class you were unprepared for, what was it and what do they need?
Mackenzie said, "I highly recommend taking as many college classes as you can, get more college credit." Cara said, "Blue and black pens for Mr. Simms's class." Lilly said, "In Mr. Simms don't be scared of him. He's actually super funny and cares, he's just putting on a scary front." Kiley said, "I never had enough paper in math class. For Mrs. Dye, you take a lot of notes, get a three subject notebook, not a one subject." Gracie agreed, "Emphasis on the three subject notebooks." Jaelynn said, "For Mr. Z's: really tough folders, cause you get a lot of papers." Jen said, "Graphing calculator," to which Julia heavily disagreed saying, "I never had one until this year." Ashlee, Essie, and Peyton all agreed saying, "A pillow for Simms will be helpful." Abby and Kaylor said, "Well, get in with Missy so she can give you advice about life."
Lastly, I think my advice would be to enjoy the little things. Try to be happy in whatever you're doing. I once saw somewhere a quote saying that people never enjoy where they're at until they aren't in it anymore. You hate your freshman year until you aren't in it anymore and miss the simplicity. We all hated quarantine until we got out and realized how nice the break was. Things like that are how you can fail yourself in certain chapters of your life. So, for the incoming freshman or anyone reading this: enjoy the chapter you're in. Appreciate the good, bad, and the in-between.
