Pets are a part of many of our lives, all over the world. Why is it then that an estimated one million cats and dogs are euthanized each year in the United States alone? To answer the question, there is simply no room for them in shelters... People should do better to provide homes for these animals that were cast aside or brought into a world which has no space for them by puppy mills/breeders.
Most animals are not in a shelter because of something they did wrong or because of their behavior. They are usually in a shelter because their owner could no longer care for them because of financial problems, a new housing arrangement, or a job that requires them to travel a lot/never be home. These animals deserve love the same as any animal you would end up purchasing from a breeder.
Adopting an animal is more than saving one life. There is a butterfly effect when you adopt. First, you take the animal home, then, a new animal can be at the shelter, creating two housed animals even if one is only temporary. Finally, the money used to adopt your new pet goes back into the shelter funding to help get more pets adopted! A wonderful cycle caused by you adopting.
This holiday season and beyond, make an effort to create homes for pets stuck in shelters.
