The Waterford volleyball season is now underway. The Lady cats, coached by Kim Barker, Laura Antill, Chelsey Paxton, and Kylie Duskey, now stand with a record of 5-4.
The season began with a game against Eastern on August 23rd. The Waterford volleyball program enjoys playing Eastern as they tend to be good competition. The team fought hard but came out with a loss in 4 sets. The following weekend the team traveled to Athens High School for a tournament that included Athens, Federal Hocking, and Warren. After three games that day they came out with two losses and a win against Federal Hocking.
As the team prepared for the week ahead they experienced some unfortunate game cancellations due to Covid-19 exposures at Miller and Trimble. On Thursday, September 2nd, the team hosted a match with their rival team across the river. The Fort Frye volleyball team is also a big competition for the Waterford program each year. The match ended with a loss for the Lady cats.
The turning point for the team began with a win against Federal Hocking on September 9th on Waterford’s home court. The momentum they gained from this win led them into this week. The Lady cats hosted Shenandoah, and after a 5 set game and some official rulings they came out with another win. The next day the girls traveled to Southern and brought home another victory. On Thursday, Waterford volleyball welcomed Belpre to the Cooper. The high-energy game resulted in a 3-set sweep and another win in the books for the Lady cats.
When asked how she feels the season is going, captain, Lily Roberts, said, “We had a rough start with our serve receive and some defense and just being aggressive but now we’re really coming into the season and all the team is coming together and playing very well together.” She finished by saying, “We are excited for the week ahead and to better our record”. When asked about the season so far Cara Taylor said that she has a phrase that keeps her motivated: “Don’t think, just be awesome”.
The team enjoys their time on the court but their best memories come from outside the gym. Their regularly hosted team meals bring lots of laughs. You can usually catch Ryleigh Rutter, the team hairstylist, braiding someone’s hair before every home game. Team bonding activities have included the annual sleepover where they held their toilet paper dress contest and their usual secret-spilling session. But as everyone knows, what is said at the sleepover stays at the sleepover!
