One of the main aims of the partnership with Njoro DEB Primary School is to develop a sense of equality with others around the world. This helps our children to understand the challenges faced by others, but also to understand that despite living in a third world country, there is an incredible vibrancy and richness to the culture. When the children at Wincham CP School grow up, they will be working with people around the world, collaborating online and using video calling as part of their daily lives. In order to prepare them for this, we must equip the children with tolerance, emapthy and understanding.
The partnership with Njoro DEB Primary School in Kenya was established in 2009 with British Council funding, and has been maintained ever since in a range of ways.
It is at the heart of the work that we do to prepare children for life in modern Britain, something commented upon by the Ofsted inspection team in November last year.
Teachers from Wincham have visited Kenya many times, and we have hosted return visits from Kenyan teachers. There is extensive communication between the two schools as teachers in England and Keny ahve developed close personal friendships. Professionally, there has been a huge impact on the children of both schools through attitudes, understanding of global citizenship and personal development. Teachers in England and Kenya have all developed in terms of their teaching practices, taking the best of the ideas from each others' schools.
Further detailed information about the visits and how the partnership has developed over time can be found here. Impact report.
At Wincham Community Primary School, we believe in creating a vibrant and supportive learning environment for our pupils. One way we achieve this is through the use of "working walls" in our classrooms.
Working walls are interactive displays that evolve throughout a topic or unit of study. They are a visual representation of the learning journey, showcasing key concepts, vocabulary, examples, and student work.
How do they support learning in maths?
Visual reminders: Working walls provide a constant visual reference for students, reinforcing key mathematical concepts and vocabulary.
Active engagement: Students contribute to the wall by adding their own work, ideas, and solutions, fostering a sense of ownership and engagement in the learning process.
Collaborative learning: Working walls encourage peer-to-peer learning and discussion as students share their understanding and problem-solving strategies.
Scaffolding: The walls provide a scaffold for learning, breaking down complex concepts into smaller, more manageable steps.
Celebrating progress: Displaying student work on the wall celebrates their achievements and motivates them to continue striving for excellence.
What might you see on a maths working wall?
Key vocabulary and definitions
Examples of different problem-solving strategies
Visual representations of mathematical concepts
Student work demonstrating different levels of understanding
Challenges and open-ended problems to stimulate thinking
We encourage you to discuss the working walls with your child and ask them to explain what they have been learning. Your support in reinforcing these concepts at home can make a significant difference in their mathematical development.
This week children enjoyed an assembly with Clare Spurway, a World Masters 60m champion.
From Claire:
"I'm Claire Spurway and I run Five Star Athletics, a world class athletics program for primary school children.
I'm a world masters 60m champion and will be providing after school athletics classes at Wincham Community Primary School to help children, regardless of ability help to achieve competence in athletics, improve sports performance and increase general fitness to promote a healthy lifestyle.
I have an ambition to pass on my knowledge to help as many children as possible to discover the many benefits sport can offer for life and to help children believe in themselves.
This is a structured program with a warm up, athletics events, relays and athletics games. Children will learn how to run, jump and throw.
Enabling children to discover what athletics is and learn basic techniques and rules of different athletic disciplines.
Also guaranteed fun while receiving an athletics education!
Classes will be on Thursdays 3.25pm - 4.25pm for years 3 - 6.
Bookings can be made here: https://five-star-athletics.classforkids.io
Our Sports Crew are children in Years 5 & 6 who organise and lead activities at lunchtime for younger children. This week they took part in a training session with a teacher from Rudheath Senior Academy as part of our work with the Vale Royal School Sports Partnership.
Children have a range of leadership experiences whilst at school, and enjoy being role models for younger pupils. We are all very proud of these children who have shown a commitment to helping others and being active citizens.
An exciting online lesson for Badgers class this week, joining with over 1000 other learners across the country to talk about Artificial Intelligence.

We're delighted to invite you to a Phonics Workshop designed to support your child's early reading skills. This session will provide a deeper understanding of phonics instruction at Wincham, particularly how we prepare children for the DfE Phonics Screening Check. We'll share practical tips and activities you can use at home to boost your child's confidence and progress. We look forward to seeing you there!
The session will take place in school from 9am-10am and again from 4.30-5.30, for those who can't attend in the day.
Wincham Primary School will be joining thousands of schools across the UK and taking part in Hello Yellow in support of YoungMinds on Thursday 10 October (World Mental Health Day) where we’ll be asking everyone to wear something yellow. Children could come to school all in yellow, or with 1 yellow item, such as a t-shirt, or even in clothes with a splash of yellow, or with a yellow hair bobble.
To take part, students can wear yellow to school, and we’d like to ask parents and carers to consider donating to help YoungMinds keep fighting for young people’s mental health. Our suggested donation is £1, which can be brought into school on the day. This is completely optional, and you don’t have to donate money in order to take part!
Finally, YoungMinds have resources for parents and carers to find help and advice, if you’re ever concerned about a child or young person – you can find this on their website: www.youngminds.org.uk/parent.
During the few days leading up to this special day, we will be teaching children strategies to support their mental health and wellbeing. This will be something simple, such as how movement supports emotional regulation, or a simple breathing practice to help calm down.
On Friday the 18th of October, we will host a coffee morning for parents in the hall, straight after the children go into school.
This will be an informal event for those who can stay and have a brew and chat. We aim to hold these regularly, and at each event some school staff will be present to talk to parents, find out how things are going and take feedback.
Each coffee morning will have a presentation/ information session of some sort, sharing what and how we do things in school. On the 18th, school staff will present information about emotional health & wellbeing; how to maintain positive wellbeing, some of the things we do to support mental health, and for parents about maintaining your own wellbeing.
We look forward to seeing you there.
Thank you to all those who gave consent for the flu vaccinations this week. Further information is available here.
