Nurturing Hearts and Minds: Wincham's HeartSmart Approach
At Wincham CP School, we understand that pupils must be provided with an education that prepares them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. A key part of this relates to relationships and health education, which must be delivered to every primary-aged pupil. Primary schools also have the option to decide whether pupils are taught sex education.
Relationships education focuses on giving pupils the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships, and to build their self-efficacy. Health education focuses on equipping pupils with the knowledge they need to make good decisions about their own health and wellbeing.
We understand our responsibility to deliver a high-quality, age-appropriate and evidence-based relationships, sex and health curriculum for all our pupils. We use a scheme of work called HeartSmart as a basis to structure our curriculum
HeartSmart is a creative approach that we use to build character, emotional health and resilience in children. Equipping children with foundational principles and skills that will improve their mental health and relationships and academic achievement, at Wincham, we want everyone to know that they are loved, cared for and valued.
Information about the Heartsmart Relationships & Health Education scheme can be found on the school website.
Our Heartsmart scheme is most often taught through discussion. We record these discussions on the Heartsmart boards in each classroom. They are a reminder for the class of what was discussed and agreed upon as how to behave, how we try to think and feel. They also serve as a record of the teaching, so that we can monitor the quality and content of the learning.
It was lovely to see so many people enjoying a good book in school today - possibly our best attended Stay & Do event to date! Thank you to all the people who took time out of their busy day to support their children in developing a lifelong love of reading.
This week Rabbits class have been working as a team to sort words into whether they are materials or not materials (objects). There were a lot of smiley faces in this fun lesson!
We're delighted to invite you to a Phonics Workshop designed to support your child's early reading skills. This session will provide a deeper understanding of phonics instruction at Wincham, particularly how we prepare children for the DfE Phonics Screening Check. We'll share practical tips and activities you can use at home to boost your child's confidence and progress. We look forward to seeing you there!
The session will take place in school from 9am-10am and again from 4.30-5.30, for those who can't attend in the day.
We teach in a range of ways because children learn best with different types of input to reinforce a concept.
Kinaesthetic learning (or active learning, as we call it in school) not only makes lessons fun and engaging but also strengthens neural pathways in the brain, leading to improved memory and retention. By actively involving their bodies in the learning process, our pupils at Wincham are better able to internalize and recall information, setting them up for success.
Wincham Primary School will be joining thousands of schools across the UK and taking part in Hello Yellow in support of YoungMinds on Thursday 10 October (World Mental Health Day) where we’ll be asking everyone to wear something yellow. Children could come to school all in yellow, or with 1 yellow item, such as a t-shirt, or even in clothes with a splash of yellow, or with a yellow hair bobble.
To take part, students can wear yellow to school, and we’d like to ask parents and carers to consider donating to help YoungMinds keep fighting for young people’s mental health. Our suggested donation is £1, which can be brought into school on the day. This is completely optional, and you don’t have to donate money in order to take part!
Finally, YoungMinds have resources for parents and carers to find help and advice, if you’re ever concerned about a child or young person – you can find this on their website: www.youngminds.org.uk/parent.
During the few days leading up to this special day, we will be teaching children strategies to support their mental health and wellbeing. This will be something simple, such as how movement supports emotional regulation, or a simple breathing practice to help calm down.
On Friday the 18th of October, we will host a coffee morning for parents in the hall. This will be an informal event for those who can stay and have a brew and chat. We aim to hold these regularly, and at each event some school staff will be present to talk to parents, find out how things are going and take feedback.
Each coffee morning will have a presentation/ information session of some sort, sharing what and how we do things in school. On the 18th, school staff will present information about emotional health & wellbeing; how to maintain positive wellbeing, some of the things we do to support mental health, and for parents about maintaining your own wellbeing. We look forward to seeing you there.
At Wincham Community Primary School, we deeply value the partnership we have with our families. We recognise that open communication and mutual respect are essential in fostering a positive and supportive environment for all our children.
We understand that at times, concerns or frustrations may arise. We want to encourage all parents to feel comfortable approaching us directly to discuss any issues openly and constructively. Our staff is always here to listen and work collaboratively to find solutions.
In recent weeks, we have noticed some instances where communication, particularly within certain online platforms, has not adhered to the respectful and considerate tone we expect within our school community. As outlined in our Parents' Code of Conduct, we ask that all communication, both in person and online, be courteous and mindful of others.
Remember, we are all working towards the same goal: the well-being and success of your children. By maintaining open lines of communication and upholding a respectful approach, we can ensure that Wincham continues to be a nurturing and thriving learning environment for every child.
If you need to speak to a teacher about something, please use the class email address to arrange a meeting or phone call. Teachers will ask for a very brief idea of what the meeting is about. This allows teachers to find information and prepare for the meeting as necessary, making it easier and more productive for all concerned.
We're excited to announce that Wincham Community Primary School is participating in the Asda Cashpot for Schools promotion!
Every time you shop at Asda using the Asda Rewards app, you can select our school to receive a donation. It's a fantastic opportunity to raise much-needed funds for our school, simply by doing your regular shopping.
