A TECHNIQUE FOR TESTING YOUR DEEPER UNDERSTANDING | STUDY HABITS & TECHNIQUES | PAGE 84
Elaborative interrogation has been studied by cognitive scientists and found to have significant benefits in supporting learning or as preparation for taking a test. Here we call it elaborative questioning. By yourself or with a partner, take turns to ask each other questions that require you to add more and more explanatory details. This is the opposite to summarising. Instead of starting with a lot of information and condensing it, start with a simple idea or a summary and expand to see how much you know.
