John 17:3 Should be Translated as the Only TRUTHFUL God!
***What Does John 17:3 TRULY mean?
Here is John 17:3 from the KJV. “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”
Does John 17:3 PROVE that Jesus is the ONLY TRUE God?
In other words, does this verse of Scripture prove that the Bible ITSELF teaches us that Jesus is the FATHER?
For you see, if a Christian dogmatically demands that Jesus is Almighty God Himself, and Jesus said that the Father is the ONLY true God, then that Christian must wrongly conclude that Jesus is the Father Himself.
So then, what does John 17:3 TRULY mean in the LIGHT of the WHOLE word of Almighty God?

The Only TRUTHFUL God Versus the LYING god, Satan!
The Bible ITSELF clearly teaches us in 2 Corinthians 4:4, that Satan is the god of this PRESENT world.
And the Bible also clearly teaches us that Yawheh ALONE is the Creator and the source of all LIFE, both mortal life and ETERNAL LIFE.
Thus, the Bible teaches us that there are TWO “GODS”, the ONLY TRUTHFUL God, Almighty God the Father, and the LYING god, Satan, the fallen god of this present world.
So then, which “GOD” will you serve? Will you choose LIFE or will you choose DEATH?
The choice is YOURS! The Bible teaches us in Romans 6:16-23, that whomever we SERVE, then that is whose SERVANT we belong to.
Romans 6:16-23.
“Know you not, that to whom you YIELD yourselves servants to OBEY, his servants you ARE to whom you OBEY; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
Romana 6:17. But God be thanked, that you were the servants of sin, but you have OBEYED from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
Romans 6:18. Being then made FREE from sin, you became the servants of righteousness.
Romans 6:19. I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as you have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
Romans 6:20. For when you were the servants of sin, you were free from righteousness.
Romans 6:21. What fruit had you then in those things whereof you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.
Romans 6:22. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, you have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
Romans 6:23. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Now that you can see from the Scriptures that Almighty God is the only TRUTHFUL God and that Satan is the LYING god, we will take a CLOSER look at John 17:1-5.
I will first explain all five verses of Scripture and then come back to John 17:3.
So, please read this study all of the way through.
John 17:1-5.
“These words spoke Jesus, and lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; (Speaking of the appointed time of the crucifixion of the Son of MAN, Jesus) GLORIFY Your Son, that Your (GLORIFIED) Son also may glorify You: (Here we see the Son of MAN, Jesus praying to his God and Father, asking his Father to GLORIFY him in order that the Father would be glorified.
Keep in mind that the Apostle John wrote down what he heard and what he was taught by Jesus both before and after the cross and resurrection as a RECORD for us to read.
So then, while Jesus prayed this prayer before the cross, he was NOT YET glorified by God until after the cross and resurrection, according to John 7:39-42, Luke 24:26,27, and 1 Peter 1:11-13)
John 17:2. As You have GIVEN Him POWER over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have GIVEN Him. (According to Matthew 28:18, John 5:26,27, Romans 1:3,4, Philippians 2:8-11, and many other verses of Scripture, Almighty God GAVE His NOW glorified human Son with all power and authority AFTER the cross and resurrection.
Please know and understand that God PROPHESIED in Isaiah 43:4 to GIVE His servant PEOPLE for his LIFE.
Some people will be given to Jesus to be a father to his children and give them eternal life, according to Isaiah 9:6,7, Isaiah 22:21, and Psalm 89:27-35.
While the wicked people will be given to Jesus to execute God's wrath upon them, according to Revelation 2:27.
So, to me, these are PROMISES in the Scriptures for God’s Messiah to RECEIVE as his reward for doing all of his God and Father’s will, even to die on the cross)
John 17:3. And THIS is life eternal, THAT they might know YOU the only true God, AND (That they might know) Jesus Christ, whom You have SENT. (According to 2 John 1:9, and 1 John 5:12, we must believe in and ABIDE in BOTH, Almighty God the Father, AND in His Son, Jesus, in order to receive eternal life in the world to come.
Please know and understand that Jesus CLEARLY identifies his God and Father as the ONLY TRUTHFUL God.
Also, notice that Jesus said THIS is eternal life. So to me, Jesus is saying that we must KNOW that the Father ALONE is the ONLY TRUE God.
And also KNOW that God SENT His ANOINTED Son into the world.
The word “SENT” means COMMISSIONED. And the word “commission” means to give power and authority to accomplish the task that one is given to do.
And the Son of MAN, Jesus, was ANOINTED with the Holy Spirit and power at his baptism by John the Baptist, according to Acts 10:38 and Luke 4:1; 17-21)
John 17:4. I have glorified You on the earth: I have FINISHED the work which You gave me to do. (Here we see the Son of MAN, Jesus, reminding his God and Father that he has finished all of His Will that God asked him to do.
So, the CONTEXT of John 17:5 is Jesus telling his God and Father that he has done everything that God asked him to do. And NOW, it is Your turn Almighty God to give to me the JOY that you SET before me to ENDURE the cross, according to Hebrews 12:2)
John 17:5. And NOW, (Seeing that I have done all of Your Will that You asked me to do) O Father, You GLORIFY Me with Your own self with the glory which I had with You before the world was.”
According to BlueLetterBible.org, the Greek word “echo” translated as “had” actually means to HAVE, to HOLD to KEEP, and to possess.
It also means to LAY HOLD of, and to JOIN or ACCOMPANY with someone.
In other words, God PROMISED the Son of MAN, Jesus, that He would make him a partaker of the Divine nature of immortality, crown him with glory and honor, and SET him on His throne at His right hand side, if Jesus obeyed Him to do all of His Will.
So then, the TRUE SOUND Biblical meaning of John 17:5 is that Jesus is simply asking his God and Father to give him what God PROPHESIED in His word concerning HIGHLY EXALTING His firstborn to be MADE, a King of kings and a Lord of lords in the world to come, according to Psalm 89:27, Psalm 2:6-10, Psalm 16:10,11, Psalm 17:15, Psalm 21:1-7, Psalm 110:1,2, Acts 2:34-38, and many other verses of Scripture.
The SAME Greek word “echo” that is used here in John 17:5, is ALSO used in MANY other verses of Scripture where we are PROMISED eternal life in the world to come.
In other words, we HAVE eternal life that is RESERVED in heaven for us if we obey the Will of God, according to John 17:13-26, with the FOCUS on John 17:22, the PROMISE that Jesus will give us the SAME GLORY that his God GAVE to him.
Let us now review John 17 verse 3 before we take an even closer look at the BIG PICTURE in God’s plan of salvation.
John 17:3. And THIS is life eternal, THAT they might know YOU the only TRUTHFUL God, AND (That they might ALSO know) Jesus Christ, whom You have SENT.
Again, according to 2 John 1:9, and 1 John 5:12, we must believe in and ABIDE in BOTH, Almighty God the Father, AND in His Son, Jesus, in order to receive eternal life in the world to come.
In addition, please know and understand that Jesus CLEARLY identifies his God and Father as the ONLY TRUTHFUL God.
For you see, the Greek word “translated” as the only TRUE God actually means TRUTHFUL.
In other words, there is a Greek word that more specifically means true, while there is another form of that Greek word that literally means TRUTHFUL.

Total KJV occurrences: 27.
As you can see, this Greek word comes from Strong’s number G277, which means TRUE.

From G1 (as a negative particle) and G2990; true (as not concealing): - true, truly, truth.
Total KJV occurrences: 25.
Also, notice that Jesus said THIS is eternal life.
WHAT is eternal life? First of all, it is REJECTING the LIES of the LYING god of this present world to only listen to the TRUTH of the only TRUTHFUL God, who alone is the Father.
For you see, Jesus had not yet been COMMISSIONED to become a God to be seated on God’s throne of authority, in the FULLNESS of God’s power and authority.
Keep in mind that this is the anointed HUMAN Son of God praying to his God and Father reminding Him of the GLORY that He promised to give him to rule in the world to come.
So, to me, Jesus is saying that we must KNOW that the Father ALONE is the ONLY TRUTHFUL God.
And also KNOW and understand that AFTER the cross and resurrection, God COMMISSIONED His PARTIALLY ANOINTED Son whom He sent OUT into the world.
The Greek word translated as “SENT” means COMMISSION.
And the word “commission” means to give power and authority to accomplish the task that one is given to do.
And the Son of MAN, Jesus, was ANOINTED with the PORTION of the Holy Spirit and power at his baptism by John the Baptist, according to Acts 10:38 and Luke 4:1,17-21.
And then AFTER the cross and resurrection, it PLEASED the Father that the FULLNESS of the Godhead should dwell in the body of Jesus.
Here is the LITERAL translation of John 17:3 so that you can see that the Greek word “” also means to COMMISSION.

“This yet in the eonian life that they may be knowing YOU the only true God AND WHOM You COMMISSION Jesus ANOINTED”
Once Christians understand that God is in the PROCESS of DETHRONING Satan from being the god of this present world and CROWNING the Son of MAN, Jesus, to REPLACE him as the God over the whole earth for an AGE of 1000 years in the world to come, then you can understand that the HUMAN Son of God BECAME a DEITY after the cross and resurrection for the purpose of JUDGING Satan and the fallen angels.
So then, the phrase “The ONLY TRUE God” has NOTHING to do with the Father being the only REAL God and every other being called “god” is a FALSE god, as in, not a REAL god, but just an IDOL.
No! Not at all. For you see, Satan is a very REAL being, but he is a LIAR and the father of LIES, according to John 8:44.
Let us go ahead and read that passage of Scripture.
John 8:43-45.
“Why do you not understand my speech? Even because you cannot hear my word.
John 8:44. You are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, (Or more correctly translated, BEFORE the beginning of God restoring the earth to be inhabited once again.

And also read Book 3 Chapter 7 A Fresh NEW Lood at Genesis 1:1) and abode NOT in the TRUTH, because there is no TRUTH in him. (Or who did not REMAIN in the TRUTH, MOREOVER, there is no TRUTH in him anymore) When he speaks a LIE, he speaks of his own: for he is a LIAR, and the father of it. (Or he is the author of the first lie and he spreads his lies to deceive others to make a lie or to make false man-made doctrines that contradict the TRUTH)
John 8:45. And because I tell you the TRUTH, you believe me not.”
Know and understand that Satan has DECEIVED the WHOLE world, according to Revelation 12:9, Matthew 24:24, Romans 16:18, 2 Corinthians 11:3,4, Ephesians 4:14-16, 2 Thessalonians 2:3, 2 Timothy 3:13-17, and 1 John 5:18-20, plus many other verses of Scripture.
So, I implore you to read all of the studies under the subject heading called ** D-0. The Biblical Jesus** Biblical Unitarian VIEW of Jesus!
And be sure to lay up treasures in HEAVEN, according to Matthew 6:20.
I believe that we are living in the final generation of this present world and many of us will be ALIVE at the COMING of Jesus.

Then you can understand that God made His human Son to become “a” Lord, “a” King, and “a” God, under and subject to his God and Father in order to JUDGE Satan and the fallen angels.
