Networking?
Networking… Networking Professionally… That is the main reason to create and maintain a LinkedIn account. Lots of people, including me, think that "Who you know" is more important than "What you know". Working on your professional Network will never be a waste of time.
Having a LinkedIn profile shows that you are forward-thinking, up-to-date with the latest technology, and open to new opportunities.
If you are looking for a job, the best way to get a job is to have connections. You keep a job because of what you know and what you can do, but you typically get a job because you know someone who can introduce or connect you to the right person.
As a job seeker, a LinkedIn profile gives you an advantage over those who don’t have one. It is a place where you can “market” yourself.
The following are some key reasons to create and maintain an account
It's Your Online Resume
It’s the location of an online Resume. You can send potential employers a link to your LinkedIn account and even upload a version of your resume and then share it with employers as part of a job application process. You can search and apply to job opportunities on LinkedIn. You can apply to jobs on LinkedIn with a click of a button. As part of that application process, your LinkedIn information will be sent automatically to the employer hiring for the position.
Make Yourself “Shiny”
LinkedIn lets you set yourself apart. I have control to make yourself stand out. Even if you do not apply to job opportunities, employers can still view your LinkedIn profile. Potential employers can contact you on the platform if they think you are a good fit for an opening at their company. By creating a LinkedIn account, jobs could come to you!
Tell Your Story... As You Grow A Network
LinkedIn lets you promote yourself. If your profile is set to public, any potential employer can view your information. Even better, when growing your network, you contacts can see your experience, skills, projects and posts. If you are looking for help with a specific question, skill or project, you can search for other that have these skills, and they can search for you.
LinkedIn is a place to tell your professional story. It has some of the same features as platforms like FaceBook™ and Instagram™, but rather than post about your cat, food, vacations, parties or even politics, it’s a place to promote your professional self. You can talk about projects you are working on. Promote your professional “Persona”, and other cool events that are part of your “career” story.
If you go to your LinkedIn profile page you will see an example of what the rest of the world "see" when they search for and land on your page. You will have an opportunity to pick a Profile Picture, and a Headline.
You will also be able to pick a Banner or background image... and finally a longer section called "About". We will explore each of these four items as we build your professional LinkedIn profile.
In the Following Lessons, The first topics we will be covering is your:
