On Tuesday 11th of February, Science for Life's (SfL) Lead Megan Begley joined Toby Shannon-Smith, Public Programmes Manager from the Institute of Physics (IOP) to lead a Small Stuff event at the IOP. Pupils and staff from five Islington primary schools attended, as well as students from Arts and Media School Islington, who acted as mentors. All were given a warm welcome by Louis Barson: Director of Science, Innovation and Skills at the IOP.
Pupils worked in mixed school groups to take on the challenge of building a catapult after agreeing how many tokens to spend on materials. These were then tested. Following that, each school group made a presentation based on small stuff. Topics included light, shadows, micro-organisms, microscopes, Rosalind Franklin, sound and rocks. Toby led a fun quiz, What is That? based on guessing what small things could be seen under a powerful microscope.
Louise Swan, Head of Public Engagement at the IOP, joined the event and all the attendees enjoyed afternoon tea and the gift of a goody bag.
