Staff from Islington schools attended SfL online professional development. The activities presented provided ways for teachers to raise awareness of STEM subjects and careers and to address gender stereotyping in science. Teachers were shown different ways to build science capital and to guide pupils to work scientifically. Here is what the participants had to say.
"I have highlighted opportunities to link science capital with curriculum topics and highlighted scientists who reflect our community demographic."
"We did science and literacy lessons on two of the scientists discussed and used resources that were recommended."
"I am considering using the glove making to act as a culmination of our computing, science and DT work this half-term."
"Older children could lead on musical gloves workshop once they've experienced it."
Using an idea from the CPD, Year 6 pupils at Gillespie Primary School learnt about Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock's life using information from the bp educational service website.
They examined the barriers that she had to overcome to be successful as a scientist and what helped her to be able to do so along the way.
