LUCAS MAKOWSKY

Olympic gold medalist Lucas Makowsky made his first appearance at the Saskatchewan Games in 2002 where he won gold in all five of his speed skating distance events. “Competing at those Games was my primary goal that year and being on the top of the podium in every event encouraged me to reach further and dream bigger,” he said. Lucas went on to rank first in Canada in the 5,000m and 1,000m for the 2008-09 season and claimed an Olympic gold medal for Canada in team pursuit at the 2010 Winter Games along with Denny Morrison and Mathieu Giroux. When asked about the Saskatchewan Games legacy he described it as “creating the opportunity for young Saskatchewan athletes to strive for, compete in, and experience a multi-sport Games early in their sporting careers.” Further to his impressive speed skating resume, he participated at the 2003 Canada Games for short track, won a gold medal at the 2009 World Cup for long track and competed at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi. He also dedicated time to his community as a Classroom Champions athlete ambassador in 2014. Since 2010 he has spoken at many schools promoting the value of sport and encouraging participation. Lucas is currently a member of the Canadian Olympic Committee Athletes' Commission.
