AL HERON

Eston’s former Mayor Al Heron was involved with the Saskatchewan Games right from the start. He provided expertise in the results area in 1972 and 1974 and then went on to become the Government liaison to the host committees from 1976 to 1988. As a recreation consultant with the Department of Culture and Recreation, he says one of his career highlights was helping to certify the sport of canoe and kayak at the provincial level. Al was also instrumental in bringing ringette to Saskatchewan in the 1970’s after he watched it for the first time at the Canada Games as the event's Chef de Mission. Having organized a number of athlete clinics for the Saskatchewan Games, he says it gave him a great sense of fulfillment to teach kids the skills required to play their sport to their best potential. When he thinks back on the Games’ legacy, he says it shines through the opportunity for kids to take part in sport, become skilled athletes and inspire others to join the community.
