DISCUSSION
Compound words are when two or more words combine to form a new single word or a phrase that acts like a single word.
There are three different types of compound words in grammar:
Open compound words with spaces between the words (ice cream),
Closed compound words with no spaces (firefighter),
Hyphenated compound words (up-to-date).
Examples:
Close compound words
air + port = airport baby + sit = babysit
back + pack = backpack back + ground = background
break + fast = breakfast bath + room = bathroom
basket + ball = basketball black + berry = blackberry
Open compound words
living + room = living room sleeping + bag = sleeping bag
roller + coaster = roller coaster report + card = report card
post + office = post office peanut + butter = peanut butter
