Come the dawn and come the dusk
Come the dark night and come the morning light
Come the raging storm and come the floods of pitiful cries
Come my dear brothers and sisters, let us be one
Through the tides and the marshes of sorrow
Through the rain and flames of fear
When will the sun rise again for a new tomorrow?
Come my brothers and sisters dear
Must our love be cut in two?
Must the ones in our lives forgo a different path
Far away from our home?
Must we break our hearts and our minds at the hands of overbearing guilt?...
Only then, will we finally reach our rightful place among the stars?
As we come as one and as a whole
The fire within us burns brighter
Blossoming so faintly….seeming so out of reach….
But all I very pray for…is your safe return to home
Please, hear my lullaby that calls to you back home
Come home…my brothers and sisters.
The inspiration for “Come My Brothers” was from a song from one of my favorite Grimm tale movies, “Snow White and the Huntsman,” a dark retelling of the classic story “Snow White' with stars Chris Hemsworth and Kristen Stewart as the main characters. There was a particular song in its soundtrack called “Gone” by Ioanna Gika. The song is predicted to be the POV of a grieving parent or partner during a raging war for freedom… realizing their beloved ones may never come back.
My piece “Come My Brothers” is actually more of a response to the song that tries to bring a more positive note.
The poem towards the beginning and middle starts with mourning … filled with guilt and rage ”Must we break our hearts and our minds at the hands of overbearing guilt?...Only then, will we finally reach our rightful place among the stars?” It later turns into a more neutral ending as tho the beloved have perished…the living still awaits for their return home as they themselves have gathered their emotions with the help of other loved ones to move forward. “As we come as one and as a whole The fire within us burns brighter, Blossoming so faintly….seeming so out of reach….But all I very pray for…is your safe return to home. Please, hear my lullaby that calls to you back home. Come home…my brothers and sisters.” The ones who died in battle are gone, but still burn bright in the very heart and souls of those who loved and knew the fallen.
Despite everything…the war is won…and the soldiers will come home after all.
