Intro
The OFRF Gear is an unusually small single-coil RTA from the past. Wotofo (who took over OFRF in 2019) updated but imo downgraded it into a V2, but owing to its imo inferior design & materials, I wouldn't consider one for Dimitri.
The Gear isn't much bigger than many RDAs, and its clever design allows unexpectedly large coils to be used for impressive effects. Space-saving is achieved from a bottom airflow (so an inner airflow chamber is not needed), a type of postless deck more often seen on smaller MTL tanks, & using a 510 driptip fitting. Deck space is larger than expected and a 6 turn 26x2+36 clapton of Ø3mm or even Ø4mm can be safely fitted with care. It represents an exceptionally user-friendly & delighfully versatile exploration tool, very highly recommended.
New genuine models are rare but thankfully, at least one vendor on Aliexpress currently (Feb 2025) has clone versions available. I'd say grab one while you can, the clone should be good, but I suggest a genuine model if you can find one.
👎 Wotofo's V2 Gear. Cheap & nasty comes to mind. Avoid unless you're OK with the plastic single-piece cap/driptip & non-adjustable airflow.
Pros & Cons
🙂 Very simple design, works extremely well over a wide range of toke rates
🙂 Surprisingly spacious deck when using the outer edge of the terminal screws (see pic)
😐 Uses the smaller 510 driptip connection, not 810. However, it retains my 510 curved tips surprisingly securely, not in the least bit wobbly
🙁 The build quality on both my clones is OKish, but decidely unimpressive in places. Rough base screw thread, lousy 510 connector finish & off-perpendicular terminal screws are all possible reasons to buy a genuine model if possible
😐 Not everyone will favour the postless deck. Screw-head securing of wires can be trickier than posted decks
🙁 Wires upto 1.2mm wide (e.g. 2x26+32) are great but any wider might not be easily useable (see pic below)
🙁 Tiny M2 terminal screws (M2.5 or M3 on most RTAs), so caution advised when tightening to reduce risk of stripping the thread
🙁 Airflow ring stiff to move, even after removing & lubricating with VG
🙁 Spare straight glasses seem unobtainable, as do O-ring kits
😐 Small juice capacity when straight glass fitted, and little extra when using bubble glass (see pics below)
Surprisingly spacious deck. About 8mm terminal gap available if the outer sides of the screws are used to secure the coil legs as shown.
The terminals easily take a 1.2mm width wire (like the 2x26+32 clapton shown here), but evidently the Gear wasn't designed to accommodate much wider than this. Screws are a tiny M2 x 2.8mm length (excluding 1.2mm for head), so take care to avoid overtightening
I don't recall any fill ports proportionately larger than these
Driptip connection is a 510 but very secure. The moulded logo on the cap is, of course, in-line with the "Gear" name
What my clone included. Genuine models hhave all this plus cotton, coils, and a manual
Clone included 2 driptips, both 510 but with different bore size
By far the roughest 510 I've ever seen on any tank, ever. It polished up OK but still not ideal
Looks nice, but the inner screw thread isn't smooth, having a "grinding" feel to it when attaching the base.
