Intro
A fire powered, bucket style vaporizer; this glass device provides the user with a more ceremonial type of Dimitri experience. As pictured, with the steel absorption pad the cost was $133 + shipping, perhaps a somewhat steep price point. It is a robust device provided it isn't dropped on a hard surface and the build quality is excellent, with a fit and finish that is second to none.
The all glass construction allows the user to see the vapor accumulate as they toke. The device can be used as a one hit and done, or multi hit should the bucket be loaded with some extra (which I wouldn't advise as it's a wildcard). I found it to have fairly a steep learning curve as using a torch style lighter necessitates the need to control both the flame distance, flame size, and toke rate, rather than just the toke rate that we are familiar with electronic devices.
Vaping Technique
There are YouTube tutorials on the GVG usage in regards to flame control, for example this one
The pictorial from GVG stresses the same idea conveyed in the video: don't point the lighter directly at the stone. Use an angle so fresh air is drawn in as well. When drawing in initially, it is necessary to draw in quite slowly. You'll see some whisps of vapor build and then it'll turn dense. Once the device is thick with vapor, simply clear it with a sharp inhale and you're off.
The biggest variable of course is the torch style lighter you use, some of which have bigger flame than other. The glass construction of it allows the user to see the type of vapor that is being produced as it is possible to burn the DMT while using the GVG. Per the GVG website, the ceramic inlet piece is designed to allow a vaporization temperature of 225⁰-375⁰F, that is a considerably wide range in regards to the delicate nature of DMT, making flame control and toke rate that much more important to achieve success.
The necessary steel pad (purchased separately on the website) is fitted by pushing down until it's a nice snug fit in the device and allows something for the liquified DMT to hold onto as it vaporizes. It can also hide unvaporized DMT in it if it's not consumed during the current session. This can lead to an unexpected level of trip during the next session. This can be resolved by toking without adding anything to the bucket and blowing out the vapor.
Tips on how to hold the gvg and lighter
One nice GVG feature is visible vapour during a toke. Here it's demonstrated with pure VG vapour, appearing almost identical to dimitri use just before inhaling the vapour.
Pros:
• Easy to load
• Loading is quicker than emesh
• More ceremonial in style than other devices
Cons:
• Necessary to secure both the flame/torch and the hot glass pipe while on the comeup to prevent personal injury or property damage
• Slow heat up times (varies by toke/flame strength)
• Difficult to master
• Steep learning curve
• Possible to burn DMT
• More expensive in comparison to other devices
• DMT will condense on the glass; this can be collected and freeze precipitated out, but it is an extra few steps
• If not all of the loaded DMT is vaporized, then the next trip can be overly potent
Why My GVG Is Now Retired
It's a device that I'll never get rid of, owing part of that to my fond memories I've had using it as the first device I used to vaporize DMT. It does however collect dust now that other devices have come along that have greatly enhanced the experience that have minimized cons and solving many of the issues that comes with the archaic device.
I switched to e-mesh after learning of its existence. After a while with the mesh, I transitioned to non-rebuildables for a brief period of time where I have now finally settled on rebuildable sub-ohms. These are now my go-to I find them extremely robust, capable of handling higher wattage, long and slow tokes, and ultimately juice is right in line with my methods of tripping: Using an MAOI, gentle comeups, and an easy way to hold at a certain level. The experience I get from the GVG is akin to the e-mesh, albeit with a little more work whilst toking.
