Recommended Emesh Mods For TC Mode
For a mod to be good for emesh temperature control, it must be able to . .
hold an installed stainless steel mesh at an approximate set temperature, providing complete vaprorization during a 10 seconds fire cycle without burning/discomfort to the user for a range of individual toking speed preferences
provide a meaningful readout of real-time continuous coil Wattage during a fire cycle on the mod's display, which enables quick pre-loading confidence checks to be performed
If purchasing a Geekvape mod, be aware of terrible feedback from the official Geekvape store.
Update June 2023 - See revised Geekvape S100 text below
Geekvape Aegis Solo Mk1 (Original) & Mini Mk1 (Original) - Both extremely highly recommended - brilliant mods for emesh and any other type of Atomiser for Dimitri. Buy while you still can. Orginal Solo review here
Geekvape Z50 - Recommended. Update Jan 2023 - Despite somewhat erratic Wattages during "no toke" and "standard toke" tests, in limited live emesh testing (5 excursions so far) it has actually performed surprisingly well in TC mode. It's definitely no Solo substitute, but for the price (which includes an inbuilt battery) it's simply impossible to go wrong. See my Z50 review here
GeekVape L200 - Borderline recommendation but with serious reservations. See my L200 review here. Good TC for emesh but bad TC for anything with higher power demands like sub ohm (thanks to Gumby The Green for reporting), plus fragile 510 faceplate attachment, so don't drop!
Simple to use, shows live Wattage, resistance, and temperature during fire cycle. Consider charging internally to save wear on the battery door (Vapey Mcgyver has tested the L200's Charging function as good) and take extreme care not to drop it. See this reddit post, this reddit post, plus Vapey McGyver's disassembly video (where he is unimpressed by the build quality), and this video. The lacklustre feedback of this mod just keeps on accumulating.
L200 Classic - the dual 21700 cell version of the L200. Improved build quality over the regular L200 (better 510 faceplate attachment), but otherwise functionally identical including the same power-limiting temperature control problem. See Vapey McGyver's disassembly video
GeekVape Aegis S100 (Solo Mk2) - (UPDATED 16th June 2023) Avoid for TC use. OK for power mode if you can live with the poor design of the 510 faceplate attachment, which is a weak spot. The S100 was originally reported (by AussieGeekvaper and numerous disgruntled owners) to have vastly inferior temperature control performance than the original Solo. and also numerous reliable evidence reports of serious problems with temp control on an earlier (possibly original) and a later firmware (V2.4). Currently it’s impossible to determine whether the problems are related to firmware or something else, please also note L200 issues). Since Sept 2021, user firmware updates are no longer available or supported by Geekvape if considering a purchase, you won't be able to update the firmware yourself as Geekvape no longer support firmware updating with current models. Also, be aware of the build quality issue regarding the 510 faceplate see this post by VapeyMcGyver and also Vapey's disassembly video of the S100
Geekvape Aegis M100 (Mini Mk2) - Reportedly the same poor temperature control and build quality as the earlier S100 (Solo Mk2) models see Vapey McGyver's Disassembly Video. So far no reports of updated firmware has been received but it's possible that the temperature control issues are now fixed.
Geekvape Aegis Max Best to avoid until more feeback is received. Info has come to light concerning the seemingly continuous coil resistance sampling that may cause it to be intolerant of imperfect RDAs, affecting temp control. Should be OK in fixed Wattage mode.
GeekVape Aegis X Update Nov 2021 - some temperature control oddities reported, but good feedback for fixed wattage mode
GeekVape Aegis Legend Mk1 (Original) only limited feedback received, but mainly positive. One or two reports of battery balancing failing owing to a weak sensing wire. Very early Legends suffered assumed battery life issues owing to the microcontroller failing to properly entering standby mode properly, plus the battery meters showing empty when there was still life in the batteries. Both problems reportedly corrected by Geekvape in a firmware update. See Vapey McGyver's video on the Geekvape L200, which reports these earlier Legend issues
Mod boxes based around the Evolv DNA series of internal modules should be electrically sound but some may have connector or button issues. Strongly advise reading this review before buying any DNA
Lost Vape Hyperion DNA100C - Not Recommended owing to reports of problematic Fire button. Based on the DNA100C reportedly good temp control (albeit with a tendency to to drift upwards in temperature over a puff or from puff to puff when chain vaping, see AussieGeekVaper's review post). On the surface seems like a solid bulletproof mod, but sadly has a short-lived fire button as the consequence from the use of self-destruct plastic springs fitted to the buttons. See this reddit post for details, or simply google "hyperion fire button". There is a fix but it looks tricky at best, see video here Strongly advise reading this review before buying any DNA device.
Lost Vape Thelema Solo DNA100C - Recommended but has some oddities so see review of my own Thelema DNA before deciding
Be sure to buy the DNA version as there are Quest versions of this box that are visually identical but don't have all the required temperature control functionality). Like the Hyperion, this is a DNA100C based mod, with the same good temp control performance, albeit also with the same chain vape temperature drift issue as mentioned above. If you're willing to spend x3 the price of a Geekvape Solo Original for similar TC performance then might be worth a shot, but it's unlikely to be satisfactory "out of the box" and will need a bespoke setup via the ArcticFox-like Escribe PC interface that all DNAs have. No problems reported so far but be aware of the serious issues with the standard Temperature Control Profiles, as decribed in the review.
Geekvape Z100C - A DNA100C based pod mod, but a 510 adaptor is included to turn this into a regular mod. No feedback yet received but on paper looks good. Please report any experiences to me via the Discord Strongly advise reading this review before buying any DNA
Eleaf Istick Pico 75 - No longer recommended. Reportedly has good temp control when flashed with Arctic Fox Firmware Stock see https://www.reddit.com/r/electronic_cigarette/comments/jk7c1w/eleaft_istick_pico_75_temperature_control_testing/ , But the protruding top battery cap restricts choice of RDA, notably the Mesh Pro cannot be fitted directly. Also the RimC issue reported below may also be common to this model.
Eleaf iStick RimC - Not recommended. Sufficiently good temp control (when flashed with Arctic Fox) but does not show stable Wattage reading on-screen during a fire cycle meaning that proper verification of the temp control ("no toke" and "standard toke" tests) is difficult. Also display is microscopic, 90° mis-oriented when the mod is upright, and only shows a small subset of info - needs multiple confusing button-presses to reveal a range of basic info. Be aware that this issue may be common to other istick models. Also, on my own Rim C, the battery is an extremely tight fit and very easy to damage the wrapping upon extraction, plus the 510 connector appears to have limited spring movement depth and a small (mod 510 plate to atomiser base) gap is still present when some atomisers with slightly longer 510 centre pins are fully screwed on. Unimpressive to put it mildly.
Other Arctic fox-compatible mods - some mods which are compatible with the ArcticFox upgrade may be good for emesh TC (although see the Wattage updating issue for the iStick Rim C), but may not provide required performance/features "out of the box"
LostVape Thelema (non-DNA) & LostVape Grus 100W Quest V1 and V2 (with OEM "out of the box" firmware). Functionally identical mods in different shells. Sufficiently good temp control for emesh but Wattage display not continuously updated during fire cycle, meaning the temp control confidence checks ("no toke" and "std toke") are impossible. However, otherwise solid mods for emesh in fixed wattage mode. Get the Quest V2 if possible as the user interface has far more options than the V1.
LostVape Thelema Solo (non DNA) & LostVape Grus 100W Quest V1 and V2 (modified with Arctic Fox firmware - hardware hack also required) top class temp control (I own both of these flashed models) when toking and meaningful on-screen wattages can be displayed during "fire cycle". "No toke" wattages still bouncing around but at least the "standard toke" Wattage checks are well executed. However, the Arctic Fox upgrade involves dismantling the box and soldering, plus making up a custom USB-C lead. See tutorial video here, and ask me if you need further info.
Mod Boxes Reported Not Working in TC mode
Voopoo Drag 2 Multiple reports of very poor temperature control, but success reported using fixed wattage. See u/AussieGeekVaper's test results for Drag 2 Refresh
Vaporesso Gen Nano - two reports of this model failing to perform in temperature controlled modes, and even possible issues with fixed wattage. Currently not recommended for emesh. Many thanks to u/DMTgoBrrr and u/Tree_nick for reporting, much appreciated.
