89:1A Maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite. (1 Kings 4:31 [MT: 1 Kgs 5:11]).
89:2I will sing of the covenant faithfulness (HESED) of Yahweh forever.
‘From to generation to generation’ I will make known (hiphil of yada) your reliability with my mouth.
89:3Therefore I said,
Faithfulness is forever.
The heavens are built
You established your reliability in them.
89:4I have cut a covenant for my chosen ones
I have committed myself (niphal)
89:5by oath to David my servant.
Forever I will establish your seed.
And I will build from generation to generation your throne. Selah.
89:6The heavens praise your wonder, Yahweh,
Also in the assembly of holy ones.
89:7For who in the cloud is [compared] to Yahweh?
Who is likened to Yahweh among the sons of gods?
89:8A fearful God in the council of holy ones
great and being feared over all who surround him.
89:9Yahweh God of Hosts,
Who is like you?
Mighty Yah!
And your reliability surrounds you.
89:10You are ruler of the sea in majesty
In the rising of [the] waves, you are the one who stills them.
89:11You are the one who crushed Rahab like a profaned/pierced one
With the shoulder of your strength you scatter your enemies.
89:12The heavens belong to you, and also the earth,
The world and its fullness [everything in it], you established them.
89:13north and south, you created them.
Tabor and Hermon in your name shout for joy.
89:14To you [is] your shoulder with power.
Your hand is strong, your right hand is raised high.
89:15righteousness and judgment [are the] foundation of your throne.
Covenant faithfulness and truth are in front of your face.
89:16Blessed [are] the people, the ones knowing the joyful shout,
Yahweh, they walk in the light of your face.
89:17In your name they rejoice all the day
And they are high in your righteousness.
89:18For you are the beauty of their strength
And in your favour our horn is raised.
89:19For our shield belongs to Yahweh
And belonging to the holy one of Israel [is] our king.
89:20At that time you spoke in a vision to your faithful ones,
And you said, “I set help [Ebenezer] on a powerful one.
I raise up one chosen from the people.” [1 Sam 2, Hannah praises a king who doesn’t who exist yet. “Give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed.”]
89:21I have found David my servant
With the oil of my holiness I have anointed him.
89:22who by him my hand will be established
Indeed, my arm will strengthen him.
89:23An enemy will not deceive him
And a son of injustice will not afflict him.
89:24I will crush his foe before his face.
And the one hating him I will strike.
89:25My reliability and my faithfulness (aman hesed) [is] with him,
And by my name his horn will be high.
89:26And I will set in the sea his hand,
And in the rivers his right hand [On one hand will be on the Mediterranean, and his right hand will rest upon Mesopotamia (between the two rivers=Tigris & Euphrates?) That is, his kingdom will stretch from the Great Sea to Iraq.].
89:27He himself will call me, ‘You are my father,
My God and [the] rock of my salvation.”
89:28Indeed, I myself will give him firstborn [status],
Highness to the king of the earth [2Sa 7:14]
89:29Forever I will keep for him my faithfulness
And confirming my covenant to him.
89:30I will establish forever his seed,
And his throne like days of heavens. [2 Samuel 7:13-14]
89:31If their sons leave my torah
And he does not walk in my judgment
89:32If my statutes they profane
And they do not observe my commands
89:33then I will attend their transgression with a club
And their guilt with blows
89:34And I will not break from my covenant faithfulness with him
And I will not deal falsely with my reliability.
89:35I will not profane my covenant
And the utterance of my lips I will not change.
89:36Once I swore by my holiness
([as] if I would lie to David)
89:37His seed forever will be
And his throne like the sun in my sight.
89:38Like the moon is established forever
And a witness in the cloud confirming. [Shekinah Glory confirms] Selah. [cf. Jer 33:20, 25)
89:39And you rejected and you spurned, [query Absalom rebellion as the circumstance.]
And you repeatedly passed by your anointed
89:40You abhorred the covenant of your servant
You defiled to the earth/land his consecration.
89:41You have broken down all his walls,
You have made his fortifications a ruin.
89:42All those passing along the way plundered him
He will be a reproach to his neighbour.
89:43You have exalted the right hand of his foes.
You have caused to rejoice all his enemies.
89:44indeed you caused the edge of his sword to turn back,
And you have not caused him to stand in the battle.
89:45You have caused his shininess to cease.
You have cast his throne to the earth.
89:46You have shortened the days of his youth,
You have covered him with shame. Selah.
89:47How long, Yahweh?
Do you hide forever?
Your rage burns like a fire
89:48Remember me. How long?
For what vanity have you created all the sons of Adam.
89:49What man lives and does not see death?
Who will deliver his life from the hand of Sheol? Selah.
89:50Where is your former covenant faithfulness?
My Lord, you swore to David in your reliability.
89:51Remember, my Lord, the taunt of your servant.
I carry in my bosom all [the] many peoples,
89:52who your enemies taunt, Yahweh,
Who taunt the heels of your anointed.
89:53Blessed be Yahweh forever,
Amen and amen.
