40:1
For the director. Of David. A composition.
40:2
I really waited for Yahweh
and he inclined to me
and he heard my cry.
40:3
And he brought me up from the pit of roaring [of waters as a wave],
from the mud of the bog.
And he raised my feet upon a rock.
He established my steps.
40:4
And he put a new song in my mouth,
Praise to our God.
Many will see and fear and trust in Yahweh.
40:5
Happy is the strong man upon whom Yahweh sets his confidence
And doesn’t turn back to the proud
and turn aside to a lie.
40:6
Yahweh my God, you do many of your wonders
and your thoughts for us.
How can I set in order for you?
I declare and speak.
They are too many to recount [comparative mem].
40:7
A sacrifice and gift you do not desire.
A pair of ears you have dug for me. [you have given me open ears]
You did not ask for a whole burnt offering and sin offering.
40:8
Surely I said, "Behold I have come".
In a scroll of a book it is written about me,
40:9
I desire to do your will, O my God,
and your torah/instruction [is] in the midst of my guts.
[Psalms is Torah internalized].
40:10
I have born tidings [of] righteousness in the great assembly.
I will not shut up my lips.
Yahweh you know.
40:11
Your righteousness I have not covered up in the midst of my heart.
I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation.
I do not hide your covenant faithfulness
and your truth in the great assembly.
40:12
You Yahweh will not hide your tender mercy from me.
Your faithfulness and your reliability continually keeps me.
40:13
For evil ones encompass me without number.
My crimes overtake me and I am not able to see.
They are more numerous than the hairs of my head
and my heart abandons me.
40:14
Be pleased, Yahweh, to deliver me.
Yahweh, hurry to help me.
40:15
Let them be ashamed and humiliated together, those who seek my life to sweep it away.
Let them turn back and let them be humiliated, those who delight in my distress.
40:16
Let them be desolate as a consequence in their shame,
the ones saying to me, “Aha, Aha”.
40:17
Let them exult and rejoice in you, all who seek you.
Let them say continually, “Let Yahweh be great”, those who love your salvation.
40:18
And I am afflicted and poor.
My Lord, consider me.
You are my helper and my deliverer.
My God, do not tarry.
