77:1For the director according to Jeduthun. A song by Asaph.
77:2 My voice [is raised up] to God,
And I cry out [with] my voice to God,
And he turns his ear to me.
77:3On the day of my stress, it was for my Lord that I searched.
My hand at night went to water and was not numb
and my soul refused to be comforted.
77:4I remember God and I roar and obsess and my spirit exhausts itself.
77:5You hold the guards of my eyes [eyelids: I can’t close my eyes, you God, won’t let me sleep.]
I am disturbed and I do not speak.
77:6I consider days past, years [see. v. 11] of ages. [I’m thinking back over a long period of time, I’m going over everything in my mind].
77:7I remember my mocking song in the night.
With my heart I obsess and my spirit searches intently.
77:8Will my Lord reject forever?
And will he not ever be pleased?
77:9Will he cease forever his covenant faithfulness [hesed]
[Is it] a word which stops from generation to generation?
77:10Will he forget graces of God?
Will he shut up in anger his tender mercies?
Selah.
77:11And I say, “my hurt is this: the years of the right hand of the most high.” [See v. 6; Tate, Goldingay]
77:12I remember the works of Yahweh (p),
for/when I remember from past time your wonder (s)
77:13 And I muse on all your wonder,
and on your practises I ponder
77:14 God, your way is in holiness, which god is great like God?
77:15 You are the God doing wonder;
you make known among the people your power.
77:16 You redeemed with your arm your people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph.
Selah.
77:17The waters saw you, O God, the waters saw you.
They writhed, indeed the depths quaked. [I am remembering the wonder, the Red Sea]
77:18The clouds poured waters, clouds gave a voice.
Indeed, your arrows went everywhere.
77:19The voice of your thunder in the whirlwind, they flashed with lightnings,
the world quaked and the earth shook.
77:20Your way was in the sea,
your paths in the great waters,
and your footprints were not known.
77:21You guided like a flock your people with the hand of Moses and Aaron.
