Introduction to Geometry

Introduction to Geometry

Geometry comes from the greek words 'gē metria' meaning 'Land Measurement'. The early Egyptians used geometry to measure the land area of farmlands along the Nile River to preserve the ownership of land whenever the Nile flooded. Geometry was used to construct the ancient pyramids (See image on the Right) from as early as 2640 BC.

Success Criteria

At the end of this chapter, students are able to:

  1. Classify angles as: (i) Zero Angle, (ii) Acute Angle, (iii) Right Angle, (iv) Obtuse Angle, (v) Straight Angle, and (vi) Reflex Angle.

  2. State and apply the property of angles on a straight line, angles at a point, and vertically opposite angles.

  3. State and apply the angle properties for a transverse line passing through parallel lines.

  4. Draw and count the line(s) of symmetry for a given geometrical figure.

  5. Identify the centre of rotational symmetry and state the order of rotational symmetry.

  6. (Optional) Construct the loci for a given set of condition.

  7. (Optional) Construct the incentre and circumcentre of a given triangle.
