Introduction to Coordinate Geometry

Success Criteria

At the end of this chapter, students are able to:

  1. Mark the coordinate of a point, (x, y).

  2. Find the gradient of a straight line.

  3. Solve real-world questions involving the equation of a straight line (AO2).

Where on Earth are you?

If I were to check on Google Maps, I'm located in Fuhua Secondary School located at 5 Jurong West Street 41 in Singapore. But if I wanted to be more precise about my location, Google Maps pinpoints my location with 2 numbers: 1.347720N, 103.726227E.

This is my longitude and latitude according to the Geographical Coordinate System.

Latitude

Latitude tells you how far north or south I am compared to the Equator (See Red Line above).

Longitude

While the Longitude tells you how far east or west I am compared to the Prime Meridian, a line drawn through the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London.

Cartesian Coordinate System

In this chapter, you will introduced to the Cartesian Coordinate which is similar to the latitude and longitude system.

Mathematician Profile: René Descartes

The Cartesian Coordinate system is named after the French Philosopher & Mathematician, René Descartes (1596 - 1650). Descartes is often known as the Father of modern philosophy and a pioneer of the 17th Century Scientific Revolution that led to the Age of Reason (Enlightenment).

Coordinate Geometry in particular was an important connection in Mathematics that linked Algebra and Geometry and led to many future breakthroughs. In Philosophy, he was famous for coining the phrase 'Cogito Ergo Sum'.
