Coordinate System

Definition

In a 2-dimensional cartesian coordinate system, we determine the location of a point using 2 numbers (x, y).

The first number (aka abscissa), x, represents the relative horizontal displacement of the point from the vertical axis ( y-axis ). Rightwards of the vertical axis is positive displacement, leftwards is negative displacement.

The second number (aka ordinate), y, represents the relative vertical displacement of the point from the horizontal axis ( x-axis ). Upwards of the horizontal axis is positive displacement, downwards is negative displacement.
