I te ahiahi, ka kuhu atu a Hana ki te kīhini.

In the afternoon, Hana enters the kitchen.

Ka rongo ia i te kakara reka o te rēwena e tunua ana.

She smells the delicious scent of the bread baking.

Ka pātai ia, “E Mā, ka taea e au te tunu tahi i a koe?”

She asks, “Mum, can I cook with you?”

Ka kī a Māmā, “Āe, he wā pai tēnei mō te ako.”

Mum says, “Yes, this is a good time to learn.”

Ka horoi a Hana i ōna ringa, ka tapahi i ngā rēmana hei whakakakara.

Hana washes her hands and cuts lemons for flavour.

Ka whakaranu rāua i ngā rauemi, ka kata, ka waiata hoki.

They mix the ingredients, laugh, and sing.

Ka tunu rāua i te rēwena ki te umu.

They bake the bread in the oven.

Ka kai te whānau, ā, ka kī a Hana, “He tino reka!”

The family eats, and Hana says, “It’s delicious!”

I te pō o te Rāmere, ka hui te whānau ki te kīhini. On Friday night, the family gathers in the kitchen. I a Māmā e tunu ana i te rēwena, ka tae mai a Hana me tōna tuakana, a Hemi. While Mum is baking bread, Hana and her older brother Hemi arrive. Ka kī a Hana, “E Mā, he aha te hā o tēnei rēwena?” Hana says, “Mum, what’s the smell of this bread?” Ka kī a Māmā, “He rēmana me te hinamona – he tino kakara, ne?” Mum replies, “Lemon and cinnamon – very fragrant, right?” Ka tapahi a Hemi i ngā rēmana, ā, ka whakaranu a Hana i ngā rauemi. Hemi cuts the lemons, and Hana mixes the ingredients. Ka kī a Māmā, “He pai rawa atu tō mahi, e kō (kōtiro).” Mum says, “You did a great job, my girl.” Ka tunu rātou i te rēwena, ā, ka noho tahi te whānau ki te kai. They bake the bread, and the family sits together to eat. Ka kī a Hemi, “He pai te mahi tahi i te kīhini – he wā whakahirahira tēnei mō tātou.” Hemi says, “Working together in the kitchen is great – this is a special time for us.”
