15-Minute Choice Time – Te Reo Māori Learning Journey

Kia ora e te whānau!

Take 2 minutes to choose one activity from the list below — then use the remaining time to dive into your mahi and express your learning in te reo Māori.

🖼️ Option 1: Create an Image with a Description or Conversation

• Draw or design an image digital (Picture Prompts & Māui AI Journey scroll down), or in your book.

• Write a short description in te reo Māori or create a mini conversation between characters.

• Use kupu from recent lessons or explore new ones.

🎨 Option 2: Create a Series of Images and Tell a Story

• Create 3–5 images that show a sequence (e.g. a day at the beach, a trip to the marae, a game of kēmu).

• Write a short story in te reo Māori to go with it. Feel free to try CoPilot and Updated Prompt but do not go beyond your level, because you need to proof read and correct, as CoPilot is still learning Te Reo. Instructions, the Literacy Coach might be really bad, but you could try it!

• Use sentence starters like: I te ata…, Ka haere mātou…, Nāwai rā…

💭 Option 3: Reflect on Your Learning Using the DALLs Model

Use the Deliberate Acts of Language Learning (DALLs) to reflect:

• Noticing – What new kupu or structures did you notice?

• Collecting – What language are you collecting today?

• Recording – Where did you write it down?

• Reviewing – How will you come back to it?

• Repeating – When will you use it again?

• Recycling – Can you use it in a new context?

• Rehearsing – Can you practise it aloud?

• Adding cognitive depth – What does it mean? How does it work? What does it connect to?

Write or record your reflection in te reo Māori or bilingually.

📚 Option 4: Decide How and Where to Store Your Learning Journey

• Choose how you want to keep track of your learning:

  • Physical book

  • Google Doc

  • SharePoint site (individual or team)

  • Visual journal

• Create a title and add today’s work to your chosen space.

🕹️ Option 5: Explore Something New from Kōrero Māori Kāinga

• Visit This Site and choose:

  • A kēmu (game)

  • A website or resource

  • A video (ataata ā-ipurangi – online video)

• Record (in your prefered way, digital or physical) what you explored and one new kupu or phrase you learned.

Tēnei te mihi nunui e hoa! He kōrero ātaahua, he āwhina hoki mō te hunga ako i te reo Māori. The ideas are clear and inspiring. I’ve made a few gentle edits for clarity, flow, and grammatical precision, while preserving your intent and tone.

Ia kupu ka akona e koe, he kākano ka whakatōhia ki tō hinengaro. Mā te poipoi, ka tupu tō kaha ki te ako. Every word you learn is a seed planted in your mind. With care, your learning strength grows.

Ko te ako i te reo Māori, he whakapakari i te roro, he whakakaha i te hinengaro. Learning te reo Māori strengthens the brain and empowers the mind.

Mā te tukurua, te whakamahi anō, me te whakaaro nui, ka pūmau te reo ki tō hinengaro. Through repetition, reuse, and deep thinking, the language becomes embedded in your mind.

Ko te ako i te reo, ehara i te haerenga poto. He haerenga e whakatipu ana i a koe ia rā, ia kupu. Learning a language isn’t a short journey. It’s a path that grows you — word by word, day by day.

Notes / Minor Fixes

• “ka akona e koe” is correct, but “ka whakatōhia” naturally leads into “ka whakatōhia” (future/passive) rather than “e whakatōhia ana” (present passive).

• “Ka tupu” is a slightly more idiomatic verb for natural growth in Māori (vs. “ka tipu” which is also fine).

• “ka pūmau” is more fluent than “ka noho pūmau” in this idiom.

• “Ia rā, ia kupu” is more idiomatic than “i ia rā, i ia kupu”.

Create a slide show telling a story using familiar and new sentence structures and vocabulary.

Create a conversational script to a "play" to be performed to the class. Practising this script can be done in the first fifteen minutes of the following lesson.
