This 9-week course introduces Year 7 students to te reo Māori and Māori culture through engaging, hands-on learning. It focuses on building confidence in speaking, listening, and cultural understanding through karakia, waiata, games, art, and digital tools.

2–3 lessons per week
Mix of language learning, cultural practices, and creative activities
Te Reo Māori: Greetings, feelings, numbers (1–20), classroom language
Karakia & Hīmene: Opening and closing prayers, learning and reciting
Waiata: Songs like He Honore, Te Aroha, Mā Wai Rā
Toi Māori (Māori Art): Weaving (raranga), kowhaiwhai painting, tā moko
Tākaro (Games): Including He waka eke noa and online Māori games
Matariki: Cultural significance and interactive online activities
Pronunciation: Alphabet and speaking practice via Education Perfect
Whakarongo (Listening) – via Education Perfect
Kōrero (Speaking) – introducing self, using classroom language
Participation – in karakia, waiata, and creative tasks
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
Confidently say a karakia and sing a waiata
Introduce themselves in te reo Māori
Recognize and use basic vocabulary and sentence structures
Engage respectfully with tikanga Māori
Participate in cultural and creative activities
