John 1:1-5
Jesus was with God in the Beginning
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning.
3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.
Romans 1:18-20
God's Invisible Qualities
18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
St. John writes about the Word...The Word he writes about is Logos in Greek...Logos has a special meaning to the author, the Greeks, and the nation of Israel...Logos is a special Word...And the Word is special...Because the One God sent to us is special...
The Greek Philosopher Heraclitus (535-475 b.c.) might have been the first use of the word Logos...He used the word Logos as why man was rational and could reason and be logical...He thought man was rational and his ways were rational and he Linked This Rationality to the rational and organized way the world is...At the time he did not say this, but there was this Link between rational man and the organized nature of the world...There was in essence, this Link, this Source, that made the world seem like it has a rational design...This Link today is referred to as the Intelligent Designer...The world and universe is somehow organized and finely tuned for human life...
The Philosopher Plato later would use Logos to mean both the spoken word, the unspoken word, and the word and the reason still in the mind...When Logos was applied to the universe it meant the Rational Principle that governs all things...The rational man and the organized world are Linked together...
So to the ancient reader of the Bible, Logos meant much more than the Word...Logos meant that man could look around and see this Link between man and the divine nature of all things created and it creative order...
The Word that St. John writes about translates from this Greek Word meaning Logos...St. John uses the word Logos wisely...St. John used Logos as Someone or Something that transcends all things...It is the very Source of man and nature...Logos is the outward expression of all that God is...Logos is a Powerful Universal Mind...Logos is the Creative Order...Logos refers to the Universal Divine Reason of God...Jesus is the Word....Jesus is the Logos...The Logos and Word would be a way God could actually come down from the heavens and see man, talk to man, and be with man...Jesus is this Link between God and man...God showed He has a LOVING desire to communicate to man, and He did it through the Word...He did it through His Son, Jesus Christ......All things were made through Jesus...When you believe this then you can see then that He really is the Way, the Truth, and the Life...Jesus is our Bridge, our Mediator, our Way to God...He is our Link, our Connection, our Logos to heaven and to God...He is the Only Way to His Father...
