John 1:1-18
The Word Becomes Flesh
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
15 (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”) 16 Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.
John 5:19-23
Jesus Cannot Do Anything His Father, Unless He Sees His Father Doing It
19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.
John 14:15-31
Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit
15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”
22 Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”
23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.
25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
28 “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. 30 I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold over me, 31 but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me.
“Come now; let us leave.
Colossians 1:15-20
15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
Hebrews 1:1-4
Jesus, the Son of God
1 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. 4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.
Matthew 1:18-25
Jesus Son of God
18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).
24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
As one reads the above verses we can see that God and Jesus have a special relationship that starts in the beginning and before time...We see a mystery as St. John tells us that Jesus was with God in the very beginning...We can believe that God and Jesus and the Holy Spirit are sacred and divine and before time existed...God the Father and Jesus the Son are Two Parts of the Godhead, and of the Trinity...The Holy Spirit makes up the third part...
We hear a lot about the Trinity and can read much on the Trinity of God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit of God...Mary was impregnated by the Holy Spirit and through the Holy Spirit from God...So one might ask, who is Jesus' Father, since the Holy Spirit impregnated Jesus Mother?...But the Trinity is also a Mystery of God...
Jesus did many great things and is all knowledgeable...Yet, Jesus said that He can do nothing by Himself; and that He can do only what he sees His Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does...For the Father LOVES the Son and shows Him all He does...Jesus trusted in God and completely followed God's Will...And, we know that Jesus is the Word of God, the final Word of God and has been with God from the beginning...Jesus tells us that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father...Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent Him from heaven...This shows and speaks of their relationship...
This all makes for a unique and special relationship with God...It means that Jesus is Divine, and it means that there is this great mystery to the God and Jesus and relationship...Then when we add the Holy Spirit to God the Father and Jesus relationship...Then this makes the Trinity mystery much greater...
To make this even a greater mystery and more complex there are theologians who believe in the economic and the ontological Trinity of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit...And the Holy Spirit impregnated Mother Mary, which adds to this story of God's Plan...
R. C. Sproul asks and writes, "Do you know the meaning of the word Trinity?...In all likelihood, most of those reading this are familiar with this word and its meaning in theology...But what if I were to ask you to distinguish between the “ontological Trinity” and the “economic Trinity”?...If I said, “Please describe for me the difference between the ontological Trinity and the economic Trinity,” could you do it?...The distinction is very important...Ontology is the study of being... When we talk about the ontological Trinity, or as some theologians term it, the “immanent Trinity,” we are referring to the Trinity in itself, without regard to God’s works of creation and redemption...In the Trinity, there are three persons —the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—who together are one being...The ontological structure of the Trinity is a unity...When we speak of the economic Trinity, on the other hand, we are dealing with the activity of God and the roles of the three persons with regard to creation and redemption...In terms of the ontological Trinity, the three persons are distinguished by what the Westminster Larger Catechism calls “their personal properties”...It then goes on to define these personal properties: “It is proper to the Father to beget the Son, and to the Son to be begotten of the Father, and to the Holy Ghost to proceed from the Father and the Son from all eternity”...With regard to the economic Trinity, we distinguish among the three persons of the Godhead in terms of their roles in creation and redemption...It is the Father who sends the Son into the world for our redemption...It is the Son who acquires our redemption for us...It is the Spirit who applies that redemption to us...We do not have three gods...We have one God in three persons, and the three persons are distinguished in the economy of redemption in terms of what They do."...
Then to add to this William Craig James writes, "The ontological Trinity has to do with God as He exists in Himself wholly apart from His relations to the world...The ontological Trinity comprises three persons, whom we call the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit...Now the question is: are there relations of derivation among the persons of the ontological Trinity?...Traditionally, the Christian church has affirmed that there are...Specifically, it has held that the second person of the Trinity eternally derives from the first person, much as light proceeds from the sun...That is why the first person is called the Father and the second person the Son, since the first person begets the second...Now begetting is not the same as creating...When a cat begets kittens, it brings forth offspring that share its same feline nature...By contrast, when an animal creates something (like a bird’s nest or a beaver’s dam), it produces an artifact having a different nature than its own...So the Son, sharing the same nature as the Father, is rightly said to have been begotten by the Father, not created by Him...So Jesus Christ, as a divine person, regards the first person of the Trinity as His Father, not His Creator."...
So Jesus believes He is the Son of God, and was not created by Him...And thus Jesus says and refers to God as His Father...
