Having ridden three winners on the Flat, Thomas Anthony Tannock did rather better under National Hunt rules with a dozen victories between 1929 and 1934.
Apprenticed to Ayr-based trainer Wallace Wylie, his first ride came at Ayr on April 4, 1924, when Fairfield Lad finished last of nine runners in the Apprentice Stakes. More than a year elapsed before he had his first winner, but at Lanark on July 23, 1925, he rode the six-year-old Mocking Bird, trained by Wylie, to land the Wallace Handicap by a length and a half from Bolt From The Blue.
His second winner came just two days after his Lanark victory, steering Ruby K to a half-length success in the Fullarton Handicap Plate at Bogside, beating Gordon Richards on the favourite Tinanza in the process.
James Scullion trained Ruby K, but Wallace Wylie was responsible for Tom’s third and final win on the Flat, when Mocking Bird beat four rivals in the Apprentices’ Stakes at Ayr on April 26 of the following year.
Tom continued to have the occasional ride on the Flat until 1932, but it was the National Hunt scene that dominated the next few years. He finished second on his first ride over jumps when Page was beaten a length and a half in the Moseley Selling Handicap Hurdle at Birmingham on January 11, 1927.
He had to wait until Market Rasen’s Easter Monday meeting on April 1, 1929, for his first success under NH rules. The four-year-old Sanpere, carrying just 9st 9lb, did the job, beating Barrackton Lad by five lengths to land the Risby Hurdle. Tom kept the ride but there was only one unplaced effort to come, that being at Sedgefield on April 17. However, earlier on the day’s card, Tom had won his second race over jumps when Rafnam landed the Redcar Selling Handicap Hurdle. They followed up seven days later in a similar race at Hexham.
After three wins in 23 days, Tom had to wait almost three years for another. However, he then won three races in the 1932/33 season and four the next. His final victory was at Catterick Bridge on November 17, 1934, when Craven Lassie, trained by William Bellerby, won the Sedbury Handicap Hurdle by three-quarters of a length.
Tom finished his career when unplaced on Rosemorran in the Danby Wiske Hurdle at Catterick Bridge on January 11, 1936.
