Doug Todhunter rode over jumps in the 1970s and had two winners, the first of which came at Carlisle on April 2, 1973, when the five-year-old Royal Barque, trained at Penrith by Ray Titterington, beat two rivals in the Heathersgill Selling Hurdle, although they were helped that the runner-up, 2/1 on favourite Poor Cold Fred, beaten two lengths, finished lame. It was Doug’s second ride on the gelding and they were well beaten in two subsequent starts.
Doug’s only other winner came the following season when three-year-old Arrad Foot, also trained by Ray Titterington and making and making is jumping debut, won the four-runner British Caledonian Airways Juvenile Hurdle at Cartmel on Bank Holiday Monday, August 27, 1973. This time the odds-on favourite they beat by three-quarters of a length was the Tommy Stack-ridden Solar Region. Again Doug kept the ride but one fourth place from four outings was the best they managed.
He had his final ride on October 18, 1975, when Cork Tip finished fourth in the Ferneyhill Opportunity Selling Handicap Hurdle at Kelso, having led until the final flight.
