He rode his first winner on Wee Willie in the Hurdle Stakes at Cheadle on 3 September 1860. He had his first Grand National ride in 1866, the year which saw the formation of the National Hunt Committee, when Cutler was among the fallers.

In 1867 he won the Annual Hurdle Handicap at Liverpool’s Spring meeting on the six-year-old Helen, winning, according to the Sporting Life, ‘in a canter’. He rode the five-year-old mare Fan, a 9/1 chance, in that year’s Grand National, finishing second, beaten five lengths by the Duke of Hamilton’s Cortolvin, ridden by red-haired Warwickshire-born Johnny Page.

He finished second in the 1975 renewal of the Great Metropolitan Chase on the French mare Coureuse de Nuit, beaten a length by the Irish runner Furley, the mount of Garrett Moore. He finished second in the race again the following year on Wild Monarch, beaten three lengths.

Arthur had his last ride at Uttoxeter on 2 April 1877 on Mistletoe in the Tradesmen’s Steeplechase, finishing third in both heats, but later being promoted to second place after the winner had been disqualified for running in a maiden race when he had previously won one.
