Joe Tate

Joe Tate

1940-2023

Born in 1940, Joesph Walter (Joe) Tate was apprenticed to Richmond trainer Jack Ormston and rode his only winner aboard 11-10 on favourite High Tension in the Belleisle Apprentice Handicap at Ayr on 12 June 1959.

He held a full jockey’s licence in 1964 and 1965, in 1968, and finally, in 1974, however, he did not ride another winner in Britain, although he may have ridden abroad. His role as a jockey was primarily to educate two-year-olds or maiden three-year-olds.

He became a well-respected Newmarket work rider. Based with Luca Cumani, the best horse he rode on the gallops was Irish 2,000 Guineas, Queen Anne Stakes and Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Barathea. He then joined the Godolphin operation, where he rode work on Dubai World Cup winner Street Cry.

Joe’s son, Jason Tate, was a successful jockey in the 1990s, his major wins included the Ayr Gold Cup, Royal Hunt Cup and, in 2001, the Horris Hill Stakes. His grandson is Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe-winning jockey Luke Morris.

Joe Tate died on Wednesday, 8 June 2023, aged 82.

Joe's only winner:  High Tension at Ayr on 12 June 1959.
