Herbert Toon

1875 - 1957


Herbert was born at Hednesford on June 20, 1875 and became apprenticed to Alfred Brettle Sadler.

His first winner was Lotus Eater at Hurst Park in April 1892.

Nicknamed 'Tiny', he was the son of jockey Job Toon who later ran a pub in Walsall. Job died on March 29, 1896.

Herbert's jockey brother, William, was killed in action in WW1.

Another brother, Howard (1876-1949) also rode then trained.

Herbert won the 1895 Stewards' Cup on Wise Virgin and the 1896 Queen's Prize on Spur Royal.

He died at Newmarket on February 10, 1957, aged 81, leaving £1,118.
