Ewan Turner
Article by Alan Trout
Having ridden one winner on the Flat in 1984, Hamish Ewan Turner, known by his second name, repeated the feat over jumps more than two years later.
Apprenticed to Bill Watts, he had his first victory at Edinburgh (as Musselburgh was then known) on July 9, 1984, when Show Of Hands led all the way and held the challenge of Coley to take the Everest Double Glazing Replacement Window Handicap by a length and a half. He had finished second on the eight-year-old earlier in the season, one of just seven rides he had during that 1984 Flat campaign.
Although he continued to ride on the Flat for two more seasons, he did not win again. However, he did enjoy one success under National Hunt rules, that being at Kelso on December 15, 1986, when Biras Creek landed the Earlston Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle. Having looked beaten three flights out, the four-year-old rallied and stayed on to take the lead on the run-in and score by four lengths. It was the only time Ewan rode the horse and he had few opportunities thereafter.
