Pat Thompson
Article by Alan Trout
Patrick Aiden Thompson had nine winners over jumps in the first half of the 1990s. He started out a conditional jockey with Nicky Henderson and it was on his Give Me An Answer that he had his first win when the five-year-old, making his debut under Rules, recorded a comfortable 15-length success in the Grunwick N.H. Flat Race at Hereford on May 15, 1991.
Despite having more than two dozen rides, Pat drew a blank the following season. He then had one in 1993/94 and five in the 1993/94 campaign, four of them in bumpers on horses trained by Jim Old.
It was for another leading trainer, Robert Alner, that he had his final two victories when the five-year-old Winspit won twice within 22 days at Wincanton, the latter when overcoming several mistakes to land the Whitsbury N.H. Novices’ Hurdle on May 9, 1995 by a length and a quarter. Pat did not renew his licence for the 1995/96 season.
