Francis Timoney

c1920 - 1958

Francis Pierce Timoney was born in Ireland and served his apprenticeship with Senator J. J. Parkinson. He rode winners as an apprentice on the Flat, including one at the Curragh on Skibbereen Eagle in the Apprentices’ Handicap on June 27, 1940.

He rode his first winner in Britain on Ultimate, at Stockton on Monday, May 29, 1944. Stockton was to prove a lucky course for Francis – he scored there again on June 10 riding Paper Fly. He was by then 23 years old.

Almost a year passed before he rode his third winner at the track: the Miss Mole Filly on May 5, 1945.

With a riding weight of 7st 13lb, he was retained by William John Bellerby at Whitewall Stables, Norton, Malton.

Francis had his last ride on Thursday, July 19, 1956, finishing unplaced on Sacarole at Bath.

Tragically, he was killed in a road accident while travelling to Malton on August 8, 1958, aged 38.
