Chris Timmins

Christopher Timmins

Christopher (Chris) Timmins was born in South Africa circa 1893. He served his apprenticeship in England with Captain R. H. Dewhurst and had his first ride in public at Newmarket on October 30, 1912, finishing second, beaten a neck, on Swan Song in the Apprentices’ Plate. He had a few more rides in 1913 but did not manage to ride a winner.

He may well then have returned to the land of his birth, for he was not seen on an English racecourse again until 1920 when he rode two winners in July, the first on the George Lambton-trained Harrier in the Liverpool Handicap Plate, the second on Wee Mon in the Drayton Handicap at Goodwood eight days later.

He rode just one winner in 1921, Alector, trained by Fred Hunt, in the Friary Nursery Handicap at Derby in November. He did not hold a licence in 1922.

In 1923 he rode three winners, achieving his most important success on 7-1 chance Trossach Girl in the Goodwood Stakes. That was the last British season in which he held a licence.
