Kieran Teelan

Jump jockey Kieran John Teelan was born in Ireland on February 2, 1960. He served a three-year apprenticeship with Mick Connolly at the Curragh before moving to Britain to ride for Ulverston trainer Roger Fisher.

He rode his first winner on novice hurdler Ballydurrow at Catterick on January 22, 1982. The following day he rode another of Fisher’s novice hurdlers, Run And Skip, at Catterick but there was no happy outcome this time, for the horse slipped up on the bend after the third last flight. Run And Skip would eventually graduate to become a decent steeplechase.

Kieran’s best year numerically was 1983 when he rode 15 winners including two doubles in one week.

In December 1985 he won two juvenile hurdles within the space of five days on Wilf Storey’s grey gelding Santopadre. He also won two handicap hurdles that season for Storey on Fiefdom. Fiefdom gave Kieran his most important success when winning Newcastle’s Ekbalco Hurdle on October 29, 1986. Nonetheless, he rated Santopadre as the best he rode during his career.
